My '09 is leaking oil! Assistance please

doubt it just a fluke, my brand new 2012 yz was missing a crush washer, resulting in too much torque on oil drain plug bolt resulting in stripped threads in aluminum crank and me having to insert a timesert to fix it, crap happens.

I'd bring your own oil, and give it to them, be like here add this. lol.

 

Bring my own oil haha I'd be scared the still don't use it and someone takes my oil home

Plus, the whole point is that this shouldn't cost me a penny except gas to get to the dealer and back. After repairs, it should be on them to replace the items back to how they were. And now that all Toyotas come from the factory with synthetic and their is actually a TSB for synthetic oil, I'm sure they out synthetic in. Just probably not my mobile 1 though

If you bring your own oil, mark the bottles with a sharpie and ask for the empties back, make sure the empty bottles are the same ones you brought. Also, if you bring them 6 quarts, get the leftover bottle if there is any.

 

Dude I'm pretty sure it was the and way my rear main started leaking, from that rut up in big bear...

Could it have been the first or second time you hit that ditch at Lytle with us? I was cracking the fuck up hearing you trying to warn us on the ham and then you start yelling obscenities when you hit it

 

Yeah its probably when I hit that rut. Too much flex on the drive train and cracked the seal. I looked at it again, definitely looks to be coming from higher than the oil pan gasket. And only from the rear. Looks like its pouring right out of the rear main. I'll take it in this weekend and see what they say.

Um, you do realize that the Tacoma is a mass production vehicle, and parts do sometimes just fail. It's not a sign of the end of the world. There was a post in another thread about different manufacturers repair rates (meaning how often they have a warranty repair claim) and while Toyota was one of the best ones out there, their average repair rate was something like 120 repairs per 100 vehicles. That means on AVERAGE every vehicle sold has at least 1.2 warranty repair claims by the time the warranty expires.

a leak like that would never throw an oil pressure warning light. While the OP's failure was a rear main seal, unless it was totally blown out, the oil pressure would not be affected enough to require a pressure warning light. and an oil pan leak will NEVER trigger one, as the oil pan is not under pressure.

Glad to hear it was figured out quickly. Can you give us a bit of detailed info on your visit to the dealer?

 

It was pretty straight forward. I'm out of 3/36 warranty but still within power train. Took it in, told them I have a visible oil leak near the oil pan which appears to be originating higher up by the trans, there was no drips on driveway but oil sprayed all around underneath. The introduced a a UV dye into the oil, told me to drive it for 200-500 miles and return. I went about 1000 before returning because in was busy. They looked and said they have to drop the tranny and need it overnight. I told them its my only vehicle so they picked me up, brought me to rental car place, paid my rental car, and off I went. Next day it was good to go earlier than scheduled. No hassle no arguing no debating, no problems at all. Simple straight forward easy experience. This was at Toyota of Glendora in SoCal. Didn't pay a penny and got a free oil change

I always get my parts there... they charge "low book" OTC, close to the same as buying online, and about 30% less than Claremont.

 

I HATE Claremont. They have horrible service! This is my first time to Glendora and I'll go back again for sure. Usually go to Crown in Ontario since they also do great service and that's where I bought it, but didn't feel like driving that far this time. Took a chance and it worked out great

 

On my '94 pickup, when the exhaust manifold warped, I took it to Claremont because it was right around the corner from my office at the time.
Picked it up, drove it home, next day, headed up to the top of Cajon Pass to fly gliders.

Got to the top of the ridge (about 5 miles off road) and got steam under the hood when we stopped.
Popped the hood... fuckers left the radiator cap off. Thankfully it was resting against the distributor shaft.
Stole the dog's water to top it off.
