On my 2002 Tacoma 3.4, when I let off on the gas, while in gear, the scan gauge shows 70 +/- mpg. as if the injectors are still pumping gas. Previously it would go to 9999 most of the time.
Anything I can check, to cure this?

try putting it in "L" and drive up to about 4k RPM then let off. If it doesn't go to 999 then you have a problem, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Isn't it supposed to cut the injectors out in D, and at lower rpm, when the throttle is closed?

It only cuts them when engine braking, and in the case of an automatic, when the torque converter is locked. This generally only happens when at constant speed or engine braking at higher RPM.

I am retarded with automatics though and have no experience with them so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

IIRC, it only cuts out if you're over 1500 rpm...correct?

    PS, you're in 2nd Gen...silly 1st Geners!!

It is impossible to get 70 mpg in a Taco consider them shut off.

Check ScanGauge setup up for cut-off value - instructions state you will only get 9999 if you have cut-off set at least 4 above what your TPS value is at idle (on a fully warmed up engine). IE if TPS is 15 at idle, your cut-off setting should be at least 19.

Mine goes to 9999 if in gear and coasting, more common if going downhill.
