    Hello folks,

OK. I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy an Undercover hard Tonneau cover. I like the look of the plain model with the 2 locks more than the SE model with the center lock but I like the hinges on the SE way more than the hinge "rings" on the plain style.

I called 4WheelParts & they told me that the hinge rings are obsolete and that BOTH the Classic & the SE models use concealed hinges. I also called Trucking Motion & they told me that the new Classic, plain ones still use hinge rings.

Can anybody PLEASE help to clear this up for me? I may go with the SE if the Classic still uses the rings but I like truly like the look of the Classic better.

    Thanks forum!

The Classic cover for the Tacoma Will have the traditional Hinge with the hinge rings.

The SE will have the 4 bar concealed hinge.

    Hope this helps.

I have the undercover with the hinge rings, I'd rather have them concealed but oh well

    Thanks folks!

I'm going with the SE because I really like the hinge design. I ordered it today & I should have it by next Friday.

BTW, I need a HUGE favor. Could you, rbeezy, or anyone who has an Undercover hard tonneau, measure the height from the truck bed surface to the bottom of the Undercover itself when it is in the closed position?

I'm gonna do a 10.5 hour trip & on my way back I will pick up (4) 17" FJ Cruiser wheels with 265/70r17's mounted. I was thinking of 2 stacks of 2 wheels but I think that would still be too tall to fully close the cover. Or, I can stand all 4 of them up in the back by the tailgate & lower the cover on to them & secure it with bungee cords so the top is secure. I'm going to chain the wheels to the extra D-rings that I installed since I plan to stop atleast once.

Is it OK to drive with the cover like this?

    Thanks
    :D

I also like the hidden hinge much better, but I went classic b/c I couldn't get past the 'styling' on the SE

    I can relate xJuice!

BTW, besides asking for the height inside the bed with the cover closed could someboby do the same measurement but with the top open?

    Thanks again.

Keep in mind I have the Classic. Not sure if there is an interior difference between them.

Height closed is a hair over 17" from bed floor
At the back when opened the height to the bottom of the rear lip of the cover is 46-3/8" from bed floor (I assume that's what you're talking about.

subtract 3/8" from both if you have a rubber bed mat

Yes. That is EXACTLY what I was asking for. No. I don't have a bed mat. I don't know if I'll need one so I guess I'll wait and see. Now, I just need to know if anyone has driven with it open (but secured) & if they had any issues.

    Thank you very much xJuice!

BTW rbeezy, I like those FJ 16" TRD wheels on your truck. Very sharp, especially with the color of your truck. I was trying to decide between those & the FJ 17" 6 spoke alloys but I got a good deal on the 17"'s so I am going with those.

Never driven with mine open, full or partial. For stuff too tall, I just took the cover off. For things too long I just put the gate down and close the cover, tie it down and let it stick out the back. Haven't ran into a situation where I was out and about and had to get something that wouldn't fit under it. Generally large items I know ahead of time to be able to take the cover off.

Do not attempt to drive with your cover in the open position or to tie your cover down while in the open position. When hauling material that is taller than the truck be height, you should remove the cover, store, then properly haul oversized material. Tying the cover down when open will cause severe stress to your front hinges and could cause one or both of the hinges to crack or possibly tear out. This type of damage is not considered a manufacture defect.
