Well, we finished up my project car last weekend, and it was finally time to take it home (about 550 miles). I rented a trailer from U-Haul, and hooked the Tacoma up for what I thought would be a long and painful drive. I must say, I was very impressed by the truck when it came to towing about 4,500 lbs. I was able to do 65-75 mph safely, and got between 12-14 mpg the whole way home. It wasn't as comfortable as a full-size would have been, but it far exceeded my expectations.

I have long said that my truck's weak link was it's towing capabilities. However, up to this point the trailers I have towed have all been either very small (move all over the place) or had significant wind drag concerns (tall ramp gates to catch the wind). I do now think this truck can be a capable hauler when set up right, and while not perfect, it did a great job for me.

Now of course, are some pictures...

    Nice man! and nice car!

I’m kinda surprised U haul rented the trailer to you.

we had a time getting a trailer for my brother audi a4 and for it to be towed by dads ’00 tundra. They keep telling us it would not work, but their sit said it would work. they ended of founding a trailer that would work.

I had heard horror stories, but I didn't have the least bit of a problem renting the trailer. Their system agreed with the 6,000 lb tow rating, and the car and trailer together were under 4,500. But yeah, I had heard the same thing about U-Haul not being the easiest to work with.

Maybe the A4 being AWD was heavy enough that their system wouldn't allow it? The Mustang is actually pretty light (2,600 lbs or so).

yeah. and yeah i think it was a weight thing with the car and trailer. They said they have 2 or 3 different size trailers that that car will fit on. and it would only work with the smallest one or something.

but also they wont let you tow the max of what the truck can. only like 80% or something or what the max tow rating is.

Do you have the tsb done for your leaf? I towed a trailer last time with 3 leaf pack and changing it to 4 leaf felt so much better. Well Atleast IMO.

It's the original 289 block and heads. It's got the normal upgrades, and forged pistons, etc. About 300hp. Automatic trans, but someday will be a 5 speed and 302 motor.

I couldn't get my dealer to approve the TSB pack, so it's the original. When the suspension wears out, I'll probably upgrade to Dakars

289@300hp, that should be a sweet setup in that light car.

Yeah, that's exactly what it's built for...to be a little screamer. It really wakes up around 3500 rpm through 5500. Definitely fun to drive...but not really all that fast compared to today's technology.

    P.s.

Thanks. It's a '65...but you'd have no way of knowing, because basically every exterior part that's different between the 2 years (grill, side vents, wheels, etc) isn't stock anyways. Good guess!

Might not be the fastest but it should be a well balanced package with just the right amount of visceral feel. Some of the new technology isolates the driver too much, nice to have that little set back in the seat when the secondaries on the 4v open up and it comes on the cam.
