has anybody here tracked down a previously owned car?

Id consider myself going through an early midlife crises, dont know why or how, perhaps stressful job and stressful home life.
On to the question, in 2007 i traded in a pontiac trans am on another vehicle. A fewdays ago i was bored it work and dug up some old pictures of it on some other car forums. I would like to do some research and possibly buy it back, if heard if people doing this. The dealer has been closed down for a long time so no leads there. The only other thing i can think to do is find a record of the vin from someplace ( maybe old registration or insurance papers or contact the MVA) then run a carfax and NICB check to seewhat state or city it was last sold in. I dont think i have any registration or insurance papers left over from it and i dont know if the MVA would be cooperative with this type of request ( just getting a vin from a vehicle that used to be registered to me, im positive they cant tell me where its registered now). If i can find the last place it was registered i would have a starting point. (I could check local dealers or car clubs in that area) If all this fails i may just have to settlewith buying another similar vehicle. Has anybody here done this before? Ive already started looking on the ls1 and f body forums.
