Any thoughts on this article? I'm buying a truck this fall. Money is in the bank. I've been waiting 2 years to buy my next truck and have followed Tacomas all along because I felt they were the most capable, dependable, and best looking mid size truck on the market. But with most manufacturers going to direct injection and 6 to 8 speed transmissions, it looks like the Tacoma will soon be outdated, if not already.

Yes GM's new global truck is ugly as sin which can be seen here.

I hope they make at least a few body changes so it's a little more bearable. But even if they don't, 30mpg's may make it worth getting. What do you guys think? I know die hard Tacoma lovers will crucify me for thinking about buying something else, but come on, 30mpg's! Thats at least worth considering and thats all I'm doing at this point. Especially if they offer an off road model with good shocks, tires, and rear diff lock.

The small turbo diesels are intriguing but I wouldn't buy one during the first model year. This is a Tacoma website so obviously you're going to get the majority of people saying buy a Tacoma... That being said, I'm looking forward to what other manufacturers come up with to compete with one another!

Competition always brings better products. Personally, I'd like to see what Toyota does in response to the competition. We know there is bound to be a redesign sooner or later and I am still hopeful that toyota will destroy the competition in the long run. Clearly they have the design and innovation to make something great...just gotta wait and see what comes out.

The article seems focused only on mileage. People buying trucks based only on mileage are going to get what they've paid for. The Chevy's still a Chevy and I think at this point Toyo wins hands down in product loyalty and for a good reason. I am hoping this new Chevy will cut into the market enough to get Toyota off their asses and look at better fuel economy. They already have the technology. The just need a reason to apply it to the Tacoma.

Their full sized trucks are nice, they haven't made a decent mid-sized truck in a long time though.

20yr old trucks on the road disprove "outdated".... for any brand, my view is, just not as current in my view.

The competition has to do better than Toyota... or other brands to be successful.... they wouldn't make a new truck that did no more than the competition. So Toyota will eventually update too, only when they feel it impacts bottom line IMO, its just the nature of business, nothing we need to get mad or excited about.

ALL manufacturers will be improving power and mpg.... they have to now to meet EPA standards down the road. This doesn't mean brand x is lagging, perhaps waiting for 2-3 brands to commit to changes, then improve on that.
The American models aren't, on their own commitment, suddenly trying to be better, or are better than Toyota, just chasing the same end goals, disguising it as yet another "grand slam finish record year" to be part of. But I do hope they do well, Toyota will have to step up or out in the end.

All trucks will likely get uglier, after the r&d tricks run out they will have to lower a .35 coefficient of drag , down to what... .3 ... lower.... to the point even a ridgeline will look like a sedan, maybe.

We're left with a choice, gamble the newer stuff (finally) has better quality, or just buy a known variable in the Tacoma. I'll just do nothing, I don't need to, lucky me.

I feel for the next 5 or more years, each year will offer more at a faster pace, buyers will often wish they waited a year, similar to ipod 2 going to ipod3 on and on. In the end you cant outwait developments for 7 years.

It's a 2014 Chevy Hilux! It is funny how companies copy each others designs..
