Not sure about a 96. I think on the newer ones you would get a Check Engine Light code about the cat not working correctly. I think they have a O2 sensor before and after the cat.

my check engine light is on, and i figured the 02 sensors are the reason. i guess my question is, will anything actually happen to my engine, or is it just reading too much exhaust leaving without being filtered

    Hi Toytaco85,

If the computer read the 02 sensor and adjusts fuel mix or timing, it could make some difference in performance and gas mileage. I'm not sure what actually takes place. But my guess is that if you don't get any pinging and the engine temp stays alright then you probably aren't hurting anything.

I think for this one you need some expert advice.

I recently saw a news item down here in SC where cats were being stolen at shopping malls. I think comprehensive coverage on the insurance would cover it (minus deductable, of course). If I didn't have it insured I'd be looking around on ebay or junk yards for another cat.

when they stole mine, they were nice enough to just unbolt it, leave me the bolts and the gaskets, so i didnt have to do much but bolt on the straight pipe. i have a $500 deductable, but that would be way more than buying the cat and putting it on myself. i got the straight pipe from lcengineering, i love that site
