Is it smoke or condensate? I have seen when the Thermistor goes bad and it freezes up then it blows out a very cold mist. The stink is from the excessive moisture.

Yeah the smell is from stuff growing in there. Yuck! I had to spray lysol in through the filter door of my '09 once a month during the summer to keep it under control. Tried to kill it and doggonit life finds a way. When I used the A/C more, it seemed to flush out better and it wouldn't be such a problem.

The vapor doesn't necessarily have to be from a froze-up evaporator core, just a lot of (cold) water buildup when the warm air goes through the evaporator can do it.

First thing to check is if a wasp plugged up your evaporator drain tube. It's on the passenger side firewall. If you can't reach it, or want to check it up close, you can get to it underneath the very front of the passenger footwell carpet.
