    Is synthetic oils the way to go and what weight for 4.0 and is special filter required.

    getting there....
    synthetic or dino oil is all preference. 5w30 is good all around oil for the 4.0......unless your year specifies 5w20...cant remember which year they changed to putting in 5w20. toyota filters test better than the rest,and they are cheap.
