1) I would be really surprised if ALL of your oil dripped out while in storage! 3 quarts over that time would cover a larger footprint than your truck.

2) I have a strong opinion (and the experience of a friend) that a diff will a LOT more than a half mile without oil. Conditions, especially the oil that was previously in there, will vary, but I would put money on 30 miles at moderate speed. First thing to go would be a diff bearing....in my opinion. Many other paranoid folks will disagree, but this is my opinion.

If you really only went a half mile then it wouldn't hurt to follow some of the ideas in this thread to check it out, but don't be too disappointed if you don't find anything.

Happened to me on my 94 Discovery I. Slow oil leak on front diff that I failed to check often enough. Bearing seized and drive shaft tore off. When I looked underneath, the bearing was still glowing red hot. I had the crack welded and no problems since.

Is there a way to check the oil level and how often should it be changed?

There's a fill plug on it, needs to be about level with the fill plug. Change intervals are in the manual.

Thanks for the feedback, which also applies to everyone who posted earlier. You guys are too awesome.

What I wrote below, turned out way longer than I intended, but please bear with me if you want to know why I'm rambling so much, particularly when I've never owned a Tacoma in my life. I also don't feel comfortable explaining precisely all the details, but I assure you, all of it is justifiable. Skip to the last paragraph(s) for a partial explanation.

The scenario in my OP was hypothetical, so I apologize for my ruse. I intend to come clean, to a certain extent, so please bear with me.

The truth is that I've merely worked on the 08' in question, starting from the day it was brand new. Nothing big, just minor maintenance type stuff. The toughest thing I've done, is perhaps swapping out the copper spark plugs at 30k mi, LOL. However, I've done all scheduled maintenance items, and then some.

The diff. oil is just one example of something most people consider to be superfluous (or "extra"), to swap it at just 6k. Maybe so, but it should give you an idea of how much care I put into this vehicle, that's not even mine. In this case, it was not necessarily to get a synthetic in there, so much as it was to get OUT the stock stuff. Not because it's dino, but because a brand new part tends to "shed," if you will, metal shavings that aren't all that desirable. If I was misinformed, please say so?

Likewise, I put care into the rest of the drivetrain (i.e. the xfer case), not to mention the powertrain (i.e. engine and tranny, which got Amsoil very early). At 30k, I also changed to Super Blue brake fluid, and swapped out the Toyota pink coolant. I also got in on the group buy here, for an AFE air filter. All intake components (like MAF, throttle body, &etc) were kept immaculate, and I ran BG44k (the old formula) in the tank before every oil change.

It didn't stop at the "insides." I also kept it detailed, including the engine bay. The paint got 2 coats of Klasse Sealant Glaze (after using Klasse AIO first), once per year. It got an Extang Trifecta tonneau cover, which I kept not only clean, but protected with 303 Aerospace Protectant, not to mention the seats and floor with 303 High Tech Fabric Guard.

I'm sure I'm missing a few things, but you get the picture. Oh wait, I also tinted the windows, and used RainX (and also FogX, inside the windshield). And oh yeah, wipers are always the premium type, and headlight and fog bulbs upgraded to PIAA Xtreme (or some other "white" type PIAA halogen, I just don't recall exactly). And when one headlight bulb burned out, I replaced both, yet again.

Anyhow, I can't possibly recall everything, but it's a minuscule proportion of everything I've done for him anyway. It would take atrocious circumstances for me to even think about things like this. As such, you can reasonably infer that such atrocity(ies) DID occur, unfortunately. But, by no means, do I intend on doing anything illegal whatsoever, I assure you. My inquiry is purely to wonder about it (his diff.), because I'm sure that my oil was rendered a gift, the moment I put it in. The other items, which pose less danger, I'm not so sure. But I wouldn't be surprised if removing *anything* from his vehicle is automatically illegal, including the Extang Trifecta. I'll ask my lawyer to make sure; I'm only bringing it up to you fine people, to hopefully garner some sort of "therapy," knowing that the things I did for him *could* have caused damage, that's all.

I'll spare you any further details, only because I don't want to burn bridges here (should I get banned). But feel free to PM me, and I'll explain exactly his relation to me and exactly what he did. But I don't think it hurts to mention that my mom died last year, and that a few grand worth of my property (such as tools, oils, detailing supplies (even my Porter Cable DACP and rotary buffers) were all recently trashed, which I left in their garage and shed, and did nothing wrong to deserve it. I can go ahead and post the details (instead of PM's), if I assert that I have no intention to do anything illegal, perhaps?

Whatever the case, thanks guys.

Is your judgment on the basis of my post's length alone, or its content? Care to explain WHY?

To others and/or lurkers, keep in mind I didn't explain thoroughly my motivation. Take 3-4 minutes to read it if you're curious. Otherwise, just hit the back button. Posts completely devoid of anything useful, like Jimmyh's above, may as well be deleted. To me, posts like, "wow," or an equivalent (like jimmyh's) do nothing but demonstrate an inept mind, rudeness, and/or a childlike temperament.

Anyone else who posts, I kindly welcome (and encourage) your criticism, so long as it's not a mindless scoff or jeer, like what a 6th grader would say. And I definitely appreciate it, thanks guys.

My criticism: I would be more careful what you post for everyone on the planet who has an internet connection to find;
in your very first post, before you "came clean," you claimed (maybe jokingly; doesn't matter) that you have a mental disorder: "If you're wondering, the answer is yes, I'm a paranoid schizophrenic"

"Keep in mind" There's all sorts of "others" and "lurkers" who have an internet connection and may be particularly interested in all this information
My advice: I would immediately delete everything you've posted (it'll still be out in internet-data-land somewhere; but, it's a start)

Wait a minute, you're saying that my claim to be mentally ill is something that I should retract? On what grounds? I was obviously lying, hence my apology for my ruse. But I finally came clean, and have no compelling reason whatsoever to want to delete my posts. But hey, if you really think I should, just tell me why. Otherwise, my insult towards asinine replies, which may point towards you, but not aggressively, stands firm.

Edit: After giving it more thought, there's nothing I can find in my posts that would agree with your "advice." As such, I'd ask if you are mentally ill yourself, or perhaps just incredibly ignorant of the law? Even if I claimed to break the law, it hardly proves a thing. But because I haven't, I don't see where you're going. But hey, I'm not infallible. In fact, I'm wrong more often than right, for sure. So, I'd embrace eagerly any clarification you bring, and with open arms. I'm sure I come off as a dick, as I've been told plenty. But I'm sincere that I appreciate if you'd be so kind to explain. Somehow, I have a sneaking suspicion you won't do any of that. Please prove my intuition wrong, pretty please, with 10 cherries on top?

because if some legal action is ever taken against you these posts would be excellent grounds against you - especially the claim to being mentally ill, even if you are obviously lying
and anyone on the planet with an internet connection has access to them

was just trying to look out for you; and here you are maybe pointing towards me being asinine; while I wouldn't agrue with you, perhaps you're the one being a little rude?

To the OP:

There is no need to hear more about the situation at hand or the things that transpired to have me post my opinion. First off, you were the one who came here "under ruse" asking for information, thus you should expect all forms, not just the ones that you want. Here on Tacoma World, we are a tight knit group of people and have formed a brotherhood of sorts if you may. Think of this before you come in and throw insults around at other people. So in response to what you have posted:

1. You now know the inherent possible problems of a differential having no fluid in it.

2. If you volunteered your own fluids, work, and time, then that is on you, even if the owner of the vehicle was a total ass to you after the fact.

3. If you feel owner of said vehicle did you wrong, by either insult, or taking of your property (as it appears you are possibly saying in your latest posts) then your best course of action is a legal one, not a retributive one.

4. Regardless of your TRUE intentions in your posting, any and all that you have said can be printed out by any lawyer who may be representing the other party. Intent or not of any illegal act on your part would be irrelevant in civil court, and could be construed as possible intent in criminal court (i.e. I post that I wish someone would key my ex-wife's car, and if I had the nerve I would do it myself. Later on wife's car gets keyed up and I WILL find myself in court, most likely to lose against any jury due to my public proclamation, even if I recanted later)

5. My suggestion? If he took something that belonged to you, or damaged property that belonged to you, take him to court if you so choose. Other than that, just walk away and never talk to this person again. Anything other than that and you are just asking for trouble.

Those are the end of my comments/suggestions.

^^ No way in hell I'll heed such advice, no more than I'd listen to a 5 year old who says, "oooooh, I'm telling!" I'm sure your intentions are noble, but you essentially present a false dichotomy. May I ask why you seem to believe that the 2 options are mutually exclusive? Not to mention that a 3rd (or 4th) option doesn't exist?

Let's just skip the above, because it's quite possibly WAAYY over too many people's heads.

Now, you 2 guys claim that I can be held criminally liable due to my internet posts, and I retort with, BS! If anything, it would be pursued, at most. But when detectives discover I'm not a moron, that I give zero cooperation, they would DEFINITELY jettison such a minor "offense." The same happens with murder cases, but detectives might be more persistent, that's all. But to be fair, the things you said may very well apply to idiots, always eager to snitch on themselves. But in my case, because I'm among the 1% (made up number) who would NEVER talk to police, EVER, they'd get precisely zero leads from me, which naturally follows that a judge would never issue a search warrant, merely on grounds that my silly internet posts supposedly implicated me. Such a waste of time for them, anyway. Get real.

Anyway, I'm not even speculating. I got away with fleeing a patrol car in a residential area behind my college a while back, which most certainly is a **FELONY**. I need to spread the wealth a little, so why not share good laughs, at the expense of fully-grown adults with brains of 5 yr olds, just as I can? I'm not greedy, so please pass it along?

As for the story, which is absolute fact, no BS:

In San Diego, when leaving Mesa College (back entrance), I was NE bound on Marlesta Dr., and blew right through the stop sign, to make a right on Bickle St. Immediately I saw the patrol car opposite to me, and he kicked on the lights. I gunned it (in my silver Lexus), and veered into Keston Ct, smartly taking the leftmost corner closest to Bickle. His sirens blared by, but I got spooked by a homeowner, thereby prompting me to leave. Of course, I did not go back to the scene of the crime, and I managed to find my way out of there.

I can hand deliver stacks of copies to every sub station in the county, but you're so arrogant to think they would shift their paradigm just to accommodate chumps like you? You can't be serious.

In fact, I ask strenuously, that you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get them to change their mind, PRETTY PLEASE? I'm eager to tell them off and slam door shut, only to throw tons more insults from the window. Unfortunately, that's just a pipe dream, because SDPD will blow you off from the start. But what fun if you actually succeed!

Bottom line is you'll simply delete this thread and ban me, the reason not specified. But the actual reason is that your members are too uneducated and dimwitted to rebut average dudes like me. I seriously don't get it. Pathetic yet funny, LOL.

I'm not really sure what you're on about man, doesn't hurt my feelings any, none of this does; none of your posts do either. I just really don't know what you're going on about and parts of your last post are likely to get you banned here. Not saying I agree with it but I know how they are.

edit: just so I'm more clear, I really could give a shit less what you do with the info or what you post or your intentions, retribution or otherwise, I just don't understand what you're ranting about, and I'm telling you your last post is likely to get you in trouble here, or at least certain parts, just FYI.

Quit trying so hard to sound more intelligent than the rest of anyone in here. You're using words we haven't used regularly since the 1930's.

I assure you, there's nothing in here over anyone's heads.

"Good day, sir! Have another cup of tea, sir. Why thank you, Jeeves! I was just about to strenuously jettison the retorts because this quandary was quite a paradigm." Put down the frigging thesaurus and communicate within the century.

Get over yourself and leave. Come in here and ask a question and objectively look at the responses you get and be thankful that people gave you the advice you were looking for. Don't turn it into a world of butthurt, or as you would refer to it as "a universe of rectal infliction".

Titans are known for diff problems. Next time take note of the fancy differential cover. Tons of fins on the cover for extra cooling.

Well thanks for the compliment, I didn't even notice (nor did I "try"). I guess some people are overwhelmed by words I consider basic. In your case, you need to pick UP a thesaurus. I'm doing you a favor, so quit insisting (ok, ok, "urging," oh wait, maybe "pushing") that we go back to 7th grade. People like you are responsible for the dwindling (or, or, bah, nvm) literacy in this country, to make fun of what, 4 words you didn't know? Yup, I got moded, but please don't force this sort of ignorance on any kids.

To Max$$$$, yup I'm already banned (or waiting for it, rather). I came here polite, but as soon as I explained what was actually going on, I sensed hostility, censure, or w/e you want to call it. I initially asked why, and they spouted off unsubstantiated claims that I can get in trouble criminally. It wasn't to help me, but to validate their previous post(s). And then comes along someone to back their guy, though done cleverly to somewhat "mask" the actual message, but he got across loud and clear, as intended. Kinda like how I never stated explicitly anything, but they sure as hell saw what I was insinuating, even though I was unsure.

That's why I told the story of my *much worse* crime, to prove a point, that things like internet posts are hardly noteworthy. And the one dude who claimed that a comment of what he hypothetically hoped for (keying a car, in this case) would land him in court? Yeah, kinda like how Buddy Holly's plane crashed after Waylon Jennings said, "I hope your plane crashes." That man needs to be locked up for good.
