Gas tank help with size 2000 V6 3.4 xtra cab

I did some research and I thought I had a tank that was 15.1gal but that isn't possible.

I just filled my tank from half way mark and it took over 10gal. The needle is a quarter inch above the "F" I haven't had the truck on "E" yet, but I have had it about halfway between the first line and "E" and it didn't seem like it was running out of gas.

Is my needle off by a bit, or is it possible I have a 20gal tank?

Pre-Runner Xtra Cab
3.4 V6 2wd TRD

 

Fuel gauge is just a general idea not exact. I believe you have an 18 gallon tank.

 

What about 19? I have a 01, and I am pretty sure I have that..

Read that numerous times. A little confusing to be honest. I feel like I honestly have more than 18gal in my tank, I'll just have to wait until I get to empty and see how much I can take. I don't usually let it get below halfway though.

This only way to really tell.

Just seeing if anyone else felt like their tank was larger than normal.

 

I have a 18 gallon tank. I've filled it on fumes at 17.8 gallons before... Never again haha

 

I know for a fact that my gas needle drops below E before I run out, I have no clue how far down it will go and I don't want to test it. Plus I have no gas light so I am at a disadvantage. If you try to burn 18 gallons, you are going to run out of gas.

Im suppose to have 18gal but i cant get more than 16 in it frome fumes to filler neck.

 

2000 3.4L here. it has a 15.1 gal at empty. probably an extra gallon of emergency fuel

 

Then you aren't on fumes.

 

Don't let it go empty.. I fill up when it reads a quarter. Which allows me to put 12.4 gallons approximately. So yes, I am playing it on the safe side (6) gallons, but I do not trust the needle.. I have been taking pictures the last two or three tanks of my needle throughtout the tank and it's not so accurate.. I'll post a thread sometime with it.

 

factory spec is 18.8 gallons, states as such in the owners manual...I have put 18.4 in mine when it was almost dry......

 

Well thats with the needle completely on empty or below and gas light on for 20 to 30 miles. Is that not considered empty?

 

I've gotten 19 gal in mine filling to the cap.

Nope that means you have another couple gallons. 3 gallons left when the light comes on it pretty typical, even 3.5.

This somehow has caused mass confusion? even though it has been this way since tanks were first installed on cars.

 

This has been visited in similar threads in reference to the accuracy of the fuel gauge needle. Fuel level sensors are NOT linear, meaning that they do not travel in a straight line. The float sits on an arm that is on an arc as it travels up and down. This means that when the arm of the sensor travels from full tank to empty it moves at a different rate as the fuel level itself goes down. Also the fuel tanks are not perfectly even shaped, which again adds to the inaccuracy of the gauge.

 

Why does our needle go down so close to (E) before gas ligh comes on? I dont chance it, i get gas! That means im getting like 20mpg around town. WOOT WOOT!
