Recently noticed that the dash light for the rear diff. lock beside the 4x4 lamp was turned on as I'm getting off the highway. Oops !

Must have bumped the button when getting in to head for work and didn't notice the dash lamp due to the bright morning sun. I remember seeing in the owners manual that the max. speed when using the diff. lock was something ridiculous like 5-10mph. I didn't then and haven't since heard any strange noises from rear end.

Has anyone else done this? And can anyone let me know if any damage was likely done to the rear diff. and if so how to investigate ?

Have you done the locker anytime mod? Was the light blinking or on constant?

It was probably blinking. You can only engage it in 4Lo.

That's what I'm thinking. If it was blinking it didn't engage so no harm.

I haven't done the locker anytime mod.

Pretty sure the light was constant. When I realized it was on and the button was pushed, pulled off the road, stopped, put it in park and turned the button off. Would like to hope it will only engage in 4low !

Why do they have such a low speed rating in the manual. Not sure how the unit works, but is it not basically a posi-trac unit that can be disengaged?

No locker anytime mod = no locker unless you are in 4WD low. The light was blinking.

It will only engage in 4 low so you should be good.

Posi trac usually refers to a limited slip where the wheels can turn at different speeds such as when turning. The locker on tacomas locks both wheels to where they turn at he same speeds at all times. The manufacturer most likely lists a low speed as a liability, with lockers on the handling characteristics can/ will be affected.

110mph to answer it question, unless u have a tune to take the limiter off. I've got an OR prerunner, no for low needed since I ain't got it, and my speedo has hit 70 before with it on. Of corse the only thing goin 70 was the red clay coming off my tires. But I cake out and nothin broke so all is well.

You can run the locker at any speed with out damage on dirt usually. Its not smart to run it on the street for steering issues. Ive had my locker engaged up close to 80-100mph (on a dirt path).

You will notice if its engage by how difficult it seems to turn and your tires will probably chirp in the process.

the thread title is "max speed with off road locker on" (something to that effect) then there is a "?" so i was letting u no that with a stock truck u can run 110mph(because our trucks are governed) with the locker on (provided ur in high gear with urs being a 4wd).

As long as both tires are moving the same speed when locking, there is no reason for anything to be damaged from driving locked at any speed. The little collar shifts a half inch towards the passenger side, everything else is exactly the same as always. Once that position switch is flipped or end of travel of servo, the motor stops moving and no side load is left on the fork (trying to push the sleeve in).

Toyota is afraid you'll either try and engage the locker with one wheel spinning fast compared to the other and destroy the splines or brake the diff, or you having the rear end kick out in a corner or just losing control from difficult handling and you crashing.

Normal driving on dry pavement won't hurt the locker unless you do it every day for years until the splines wear out. Think about how much torque they handle when people are rock crawling with dual X-fer cases and 35's.
