What do you do with the remaining half qt of oil after an oil change? I hate that my 6 cyl takes 5.5 qts and that I have to buy 6 qts to do the job. After my last oil change (Mobil 1 syn), I put the cap back on the bottle thinking that I could use it next time. I live in the south where the humidity is brutal during the summer months. I don't think oil goes bad, but would sitting in a hot and un-insulated garage for a few months in the summer make a difference? Just curious... Does anyone do this?

I store it and keep it for the next oil change. No issues storing it in a garage with the cap on.

FWIW, I use the Mobil 1 5+ quart jugs of oil and it's the perfect amount for the 4.0L engine. I think the jug is 5.2 quarts if I'm remembering correctly. No more need for stored oil :)

I save it for the next oil change. Once all the oil has drained out i just pour that 1/2 qt in and let it drain out as well... just to flush any loose stuff out.

You're just wasting oil doing that... It's literally not doing 1 bit of good other than raising the cost of your oil change.

A little of this and a little of that.
Pour it along the foundation of your house to deter bugs & termites.

Thanks for the replies! I will just use the 1/2 qt during my next change and save some money. Just wasn't sure about leaving in the hot garage for a couple of months even if the top is on it...

Bw s256 turbo with 3 in glass pack dumped pre axle raptor liner bed and top rails and fenderflares and rocker panels. Hunter side steps. Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
I keep mine behind my back seat, I use synthetic, and actually just change the filter at 6k use it to top off. Then I seafoam and do a full change at 12k. This way I get oil service for a year for under $50 and if I'm not home and notice I'm low I have a half quart with me, hasn't happened but rather have it and not need it than the alternative.

Just be sure the cap is on tight and the remainder will keep for a long time, no problems.
