Fluids ?

Ok guys just got a 2012 double cab sr5 4x4....love this truck...Ive got 33k on it so I'm planning on some maintenance before the snow flys this fall....My owners manual states 75W-85 GL-5 for the front and rear diff's....and

75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 for the transfer case......I go to the prts store yesterday to get a cabin air filter and I look at the gear oils they have....All the oils they have say for limited slip.....and they dont have the correct fluid weights.....whats the deal with the limited slip stuff can I use it or should I avoid it...?? Can I run heavyer oils than the 75W stuff ?....Thx in advance ....

 

Limited slip gear oil has a friction modifier in it to strip the slime off the clutch pack so it will grip & work properly. No worries about it damaging your diff. Heavier oil will sap mileage, though. I'd go synthetic same weight- it will actuallly help the mileage

 

You do not have a mechanical limited slip. The oils that claim to have friction modifier in them, will not harm your non-mechanical LSD. Get the oil weight that your manual recommends.

since I plan on regular changes ...like every yr...would a conventional 80w-90 be good...I can get 80w-90 from work and its the same stuff we put in the brand new fire trucks.....I can get 10qts for like $ 20.00....I tend to change fluids alot....so spending the higher price for syn just doesnt make much sense to me......engine oil gets changed a 3k , trans fluids gets it at 25k , and axles get it once a yr since thier vented to the atmosphere....and can draw moisture or get water from crossing creeks...going to my flyfishing destinations.....I dont trail ride and the 4x4 only gets used in the winter or when off road conditions call for it....

 

Your gas milage may thank you you for switching to synthetics as well as the life of your vehicle. I can get mobil 1 gear oil, enough to do whole truck for $50. All diffs and transfercase. I get mobil one engine oil and filter for $30. Thats pretty cheap if you ask me no matter how much you change them. But yes 80-90 dino will work fine.

 

I may in fact use syn...Mobil 1 .....I used it exclusivly in my Harley very good stuff ....I just got the truck with 33k on it and I want to do a full service before winter just so I know for myself its all been done.....I have some time...to put the cash together to do everything at once ....all fluids , Plugs, and hopefully some better tires....not sure what I want yet...but want something more aggresive than the stock Dunlops....on a side note I believe the stock diff and transfer fluids are synthetic....Toyota

75w-90 I believe is syn....I just wish there was a proven replacement for the transmission WS fluid...I dont want to pay dealer price for a lesser quality lube....

 

Read the bottles carefully, most of them say LSD safe, they do not actually have the friction modifier added. Even if they did, they are safe for an open differential.

As far as the weights, they've changed what they recommend over the years. My 2007's manual says 80W-90 for the rear and 75W-80 or 75W85 (can't remember which) for the front and x-fer case. They keep recommending lighter fluids for fuel economy.
