I'm in the process of doing the black headlight mod and painting the Toyota emblem on the grill to hopefully match the black plastic on the grill.

I started painting everything with Rust-Oleum satin black paint plastic paint, but it was too glossy, so I bought some Rust-Oleum matte black automotive paint. While the finish looks good, in daylight the painted surface looks dark green compared to the black plast on the grill. Blech. :(

Is there a different brand of spray paint that comes in a matte finish that matches the black plastic of the grill a bit better? I'm going to head to the store(s) tomorrow in search of different paint, but it's pretty much a crap-shoot at this point to try and figure-out which brand might actually be black.

I usually happen to use whatever I have on hand in the realm of flat/matte black. Ended up painting mine with flat black duplicolor enamel, worked like a charm. I could imagine krylon camo ultra flat black or whatever its called would work too.

The Krylon Gloss Black is really close, and bed liner spray looks really good.

Black Satin is an EXACT MATCH. If your emblem is down to the bare plastic, this will bite right in because it's laquer based. Will not chip either...

Is this the stuff? It says you can paint aluminum foil with it, then crunch-up the foil and the paint will still stick.

Hehe... as mentioned in my original post, I'm also doing the black headlight mod, so no "Derp" for me

Well, apparently Mar-Hyde is available at any NAPA except the one by me :( The guy at the counter new what I was talking about but said he can't remember the last time they carried Mar-Hyde products.

Not wanting to special order something and wait a week, I got Dupli-Color Trim Paint instead. So far, it looks really good. I just sprayed my emblem as a test and I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm not familiar with that product but from what I googled, it looks like a suitable substitute. Good choice!

that duplicolor trim paint is great. ive been using it for years. matches the black trim on any vehicle and holds great. ive painted a bunch of interior pieces and a few exterior with it.

thats what i would of recommended.

I wonder if it would hold-up well if I painted my lower valence piece with it? The lower valence piece on the 2012/2012 is gray and I'd rather have it black. However, I have a lot of gravel trucks near me so I'm a bit concerned about the paints ability to take a hit!

Plasti-dip works great and matches nicely. I just rescently did the BHLM and changed my plasti-dip from black to white.

i originally painted my lower valence with the trim paint.. and although it held up for awhile.. the sand dunes, dirt roads, etc here eventually started to chip at it. i switched to the Derp for the lower and it has held up much better. for everything else though, the trim paint has worked great.
