On my 1999 Tacoma my back right running light went out. All other lights on the truck function correctly, including both break lights.

I purchased a new bulb but it still did not fix the issue. To ensure I purchased the correct bulb I swapped it into the back left side and both the break and running lights work properly (dual-filament bulb).

I dismantled the tail-light unit and all the wires appear to be in good shape.

Could anyone point me in the correct direction to resolve this issue? I'm having a really hard time determining the cause, a fuse perhaps.

Under the hood, there is a fuse box.
One of the fuses is labeled 'Tail'.
    check it.

The tail fuse looks good. Any other possible reasons for this issue?

Well, either that bulb is not getting power, or not getting ground. You'll have to do some trouble-shooting on that side. I have attempted to attach a PDF file of just the tail-light wiring to this post (for a 2000 Tacoma, which should be the same).

Do you have a multi-meter and know how to use it ?

The bulb is dual filament but only the break light works. I've swapped this bulb onto the other side and both the tail and breaks work, so I know the bulb is OK. So it seems its getting power. There are two wires going in so I wonder if one is broken at some point.

    Thanks for posting the PDF.

Looking at that diagram it looks like the license plate lights are on the same circuit. I'll have to check if those are working and perhaps that will help narrow down this issue.
