Ok so I am trying to identify the cylinder slide pin on the front brakes on my 2008 Double Cab 4x4 so I can pull the pins and lube them. The reason I ask is these calipers look nothing like anything I have worked on before and the pictures from mitchell on demand that my old man printed for me look nothing like what I am looking at. So I am asking for help identifying the cylinder slide pins.

So which is it the bolt labeled #1, the bold labeled #2, or somthing else I am missing or do these slide pins exist and to be lubed?

I pulled bolt #2 and it was dry so that is why I am asking before I continue to pull things apart that shouldn't be apart.

    Thanks

Well that is the anti rattle pins that go in the hole below bolt #2. Typically on other vehicles I have done brakes on and also mitchell on demand says there are cylinder slide pins that need to be lubed. I was wondering if the anti rattle pins where for this purpose.

So while we are at it what is the purpose of bolt #1 and bolt #2

Do not unbolt number 1 or 2 (if I recall correctly) as those hold the caliper together and if you do, you can separate the two halves, then you are in a world of hell for a simple pad change. Lube the pins as stated by brutalguyracing.

Cool got it thanks. Way to get bad info from Mitchell. I went and cranked down bolt #2 as I had broken them free thinking I was going to need to lube them.

4WD and Prerunner Tacomas have non-sliding calipers (i.e. pistons on both sides of the brake disc), so no slide pin in the conventional sense. Sliding calipers have a piston on only one side of the disc.

Kenlyns - thanks for clarifying. I think that is what messed me up. So I will just lightly lube the anti rattle pins because I do not want to have to cut and drive them out like I did this time.

What KenLyns Said! There are basically two types of calipers:

1.) Floating Calipers that only has a piston(s) on one side and the caliper moves back and forth on slide pins. These are the ones you are refering to in your original post.

2.) Fixed Calipers which is what we have on the Tacoma. Both sides have pistons and the pads float on the two pins that also holds them in the calipers. You should clean and grease the brake pad pins to ensure they don't get hung up during operation.

Jimmy my pins were very much seized up. I had to cut them in half and use a punch to drive them out. At least the replacements art cheap. But now that I know better I will keep them lubed in the future.
