Like spoonman said the arb is for the 8.4 axle. Which is stronger than the trd 8in axle. So thats one plus for the arb. The only problem from an air locker is if the air line freeze up from the cold weather. But its got to be really cold for that obviously. The plus of the elocker it wont freeze and u get a nifty light that tells u when it locked haha

Well... I haven't heard of people having any issues with air lines freezing up, I know I've read more than a few posts from our canuck friends talking about it and not having any troubles. I do think there CAN be more maintenance required with an ARB. Then again e-locker motors sometimes shit the bed too.

locker strength itself? I think you're more likely to break the side gear or ring/pinion on the e-locker than you are to break the locker collar itself. I believe the ARB replaces the stock sidegears and spiders as well as the carrier itself and I'm fairly comfortable saying they're all stronger than the e-locker carrier and gears.

The diffs themselves though are different between the two and you're more likely to break the e-locker diff.

Not sure about the ARB but when I had air lockers on my Rubicon it took longer to engage and dis-engage compared to my E-locker on my Toyota now. Also I have heard of problems over time with air leaks causing issues on again an OEM air locker system from mud and dirt etc. I prefer the E-locker. As far as one being better than another, ARB makes good stuff so cant go wrong either way.

Never had an elocker...... but I've had two ARB's on my Jeep D44's for 8 years.

If they're installed properly, including the overall airline routing, air setup, etc - they should treat you right. We had two ARB's for ...8 years or so?? And that was probably 5 years ago.

The ARB replaces the entire carrier (on D44). Over the period of 8 years (If I remember correctly), we did have an internal seal leak that caused diff oil to spray out of the solenoids a bit. The locker still worked as it always did, you just got a whiff of diff oil when you disengaged it.

We never had a problems with freezing up. I can't imagine the air lines would freeze up..but the solenoids maybe?? Our compressor & solenoids were in the engine bay (warmth?).

I loved the ARB's - as I've mentioned before in other threads - you can engage them just about anywhere offroad. I've had my rear locker engaged to conquer an extreme hill climb..... get up halfway, tires are spinning...and you're not moving. Press that button...engaging the front locker....and you're up and moving again. Absolutely awesome!!
Some folks would say you shouldn't do that.... well - we did, many many times and the locker kept going even after we sold the Jeep after 8 years. We wheeled probably a good twice a month, two trips to Tellico, endless trips to Paragon, Rausch Creek, Virginia....
