The real question here is what was the closing speed on the two trucks? If it was 20 or 30 mph then I'd be concerned, but if it was 50 or 60 mph then the Tacoma did very well to keep the driver alive. In an accident you can't beat tonnage so the semi always comes out on top (figuratively and literally).

Though scary as he!! these comments hit home...working a construction site we squeezed 3 lanes down to 2 plus the exit to the mall we were at...Young lady in a Mustang tried out running a tri-axle while a trash trailer came at her from opposite side....Mustang sandwich BUT the entire passenger compartment fell off with her enclosed... car was designed to break into pieces while protecting passengers...luckily all "Bags" deployed BUT EMS still had too "delicately" remove her.....The "duty" officers thought only the worst when watching her "actions" play-out BUT we were all in AWE of what engineers have quietly built into our cars to protect us from ourselves...;)......Yes ,she did survive BUT had a long "road" to recovery...thanks to EMS and an engineer she will never meet...

There are quite a few times I'll stop by the hospital on the way home from duty and check on a patient. Sometimes we are with the patient for a extended period of time and you sometimes can't help but make a emotional connection to that person on the worst day of their life.
