06 Sunroof

Has anyone installed a sunroof in a double cab Taco or know anyone that has... I'm thinking about it but the place I called said they couldn't do it since the roof has ridges in it...

 

I would like to see how that looks too. i was planning on that but wanted to know if it's possible.

 

Saw one at a Dealer in Irvine but it didn't look that good on the exterior because of the ridges.

 

I have seen them on vehicles with roof ridges, and they don't look too good, because the outside frame has to sit above the ridges. I personally loved having a sunroof on my last two vehicles, but they were factory. From the years I worked in auto dealerships, my experience is that the aftermarket sunroofs are generally very cheap quality, the installation can cause leaks from poor sealing around the outer frame, and many times the wiring was poorly installed and tended to vibrate apart. The main concern I have is that cutting a hole in the roof on a vehicle which was not factory designed for a sunroof is not a good idea for safety reasons. The ridges on the roof of our trucks as well as on many minivans (including the Siennas) are not for looks...they are there to strengthen the roof panel, which is an important structural part of the vehicle...if you cut into the ridges, you weaken the roof panel, which can cause improper crumpling of the body in an accident. Vehicles that come factory equipped with sunroofs have extra support and bracing in the roof panel to overcome the sunroof opening. If you're worried about accident safety as I am, I wouldn't install a sunroof. If safety is the least of your concerns, then by all means install a sunroof, but make sure the job is done correctly!

 

i see your point, well i guess highend vehicles have better roof seals than our type of vehicle. so max what was your decision here, i mean A2 has a good point here, the price and labor hmmmmm... weighing life and future rust, or water damage........ thinking........ well hope this info helps.

I wasn't implying that high end vehicles have better roof seals.....what I was trying to say is that aftermarket sunroofs are not designed to fit a Tacoma truck....they are designed to fit many different vehicles, and have the same problem that many aftermarket "universal fit" parts have....the parts are designed as generic parts that "sort of" fit many different vehicles, but don't really fit very well on any one in particular, so you end up with fit and finish problems. A vehicle that was built with a factory sunroof, be it a Chevy Cavalier or a Mercedes S Class, were designed with a sunroof, designed with the hole in the roof, and designed with the right size and shape seals to fit the roof opening. It has nothing to do with the make of vehicle, be it Toyota, Honduh, VW, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Nissan, Infiniti, etc...aftermarket parts are simply that...and many times do not fit correctly. I wonder why Toyota doesn't offer a sunroof, but then I don't know of many trucks that offer sunroofs to begin with.....Oh well.....Hope you didn't take it the wrong way, like I was looking down on Toyota....I own two of them and love them both!

 

A2mich i do understand what you're saying, but i am not implying that you're condescending on the toyota name because i wasn't. let me clear the air, history of owning different vehicles has taught me that driving and previously owned convertibles and cars with sunroof whether american or japanese when a little rain (just a little) pours on my vehicle it leaks on the inside. when i had the mercedes convertible, not even three hurricanes back to back did not leak inside my vehicle. so i do apologize if my last post kind of went off the subject of sunroof/convertibles. got 'soaked acouple of times before i found the right vehicle that is a convertible and would not leak even when it rain cats and dogs. oh verring off the subject again. aftermarket sunroof installation yes you do risk of faulty fitting and possible rusting and electric malfunction of your sunroof so i do agree about the point you're making.

You might want to take a trip down to Texas and look at it in person. Pictures can be deceiving.

 

My 4Runne had a sunroof and I miss having one...So I still cannot decide if i'm going to have one installed in my Tacoma....

 

it looks nice, but how's the sunroof?
