The 21 year old had nothing to hide, nothing in his car and he was showing that he was trying to not seem like a threat to the police. No problems at all give him your license, have a quick conversation and be on your way. He messed with the bull and got the horns.

The last DUI checkpoint i went through the sign asked to have your license ready and have your window down. I did so and the officer was actually surprised that I had everything ready. He look at my license, asked me how old I was and where I was coming from. I was 20 at the time and I was coming from hockey practice that night, his son played hockey and we ended up having a good conversation about his son and hockey and that was a year ago and now I coach his son in Bantam A hockey.

Just don't be stupid and drive drunk/ have drugs in your car and when you go through the checkpoints give them your license and you won't have a fucking problem! it's wizardry

Perhaps the cop was a bit in the wrong but like tvbd56 said would it have been so difficult to roll down the window and be respectful? This whole situation could have been avoided.

I agree that is SHOULD be illegal to have check points, but unless you live in Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming the SCOTUC has ruled that the effects of a check point out way the violations of the 4th.

SO far this one seems to remain civil, maybe someone will learn something from this, maybe someone on here is a public official, it could happen, and decides to take this up discuss it at a higher level. As long as people stay civil, these type of conversations are important to our society, to help people understand what is and isn't legal, what we need to help our leaders work on and correct.

My money is that at one point in time, this was a good officer. Something in his job history caused him to become grumpy and.... a douche. That does not excuse his actions, but it does bring to light the possibility need of better benefits for high risk public service jobs. Intel and other major companies give employees extend time off at certain anniversaries, you made 5 years, here is a paid months vacation, enjoy. The stresses of the job can get to a lot of normal people, throwing money at the issue wont help, but taking better care of the people that do choose it do it would.

    My 2¢:

The kid was trolling.... douche.... but was he acting illegally? Not that I can see (not a lawyer or a LEO). Reminds me of an old video of a LEO that wrote ticket and the guy rips it up and swears at the LEO. The LEO never lost his cool and prevented a situation from getting out of his control. Now what the kid should have done, was schedule a meeting with a supervisor the next day and take the video, maybe even take a lawyer with him to file a complaint. Then it could have been properly handled. Why does this younger generation feels the need to run to the media or social media over everything?!?

The Cop.... douche.... he needs some time to remember why he does what he does or go find something else to do. The second officer did try to get the other officer to back down a little, during the search he says, "It wasn't a very good alert." Holiday weekends usually mean mandatory OT for LEOs. They have to have all hands on deck to deal with all the stupid drunk drivers and the carnage it causes. So this guy might be pissed that he is missing another holiday with his family. That is not an excuse, but something to consider before just flaming the guy.

My dad was a LEO, my mom a dispatcher and my brother was an AF SP, so I grew up in the middle of it. It is a tough and stressful job. They ARE held to a higher standard and sometimes one gets in that should be, or another stays longer than he should. I suggest people think about every job out there, there are a percentage of asshats and douchebags every where. Learn to deal with them and take the necessary steps to help them get some help.

I think people also need to keep in mind to not generalize all LEOs with this guy or the bad run ins they have had with a LEO. If they were are this bad, we would live in a much shittier world. Try not to generalize them all in your comments and try to be kind to them in the future, it doesn't violate your rights to be nice to one in passing.

We all know what the kid should have done and what the cop should have done, I'm just interested in what you would have done differently in the situation.

I wonder what kind of reprimand would be giving out in the case of the dog scratching my truck, I would be stupid pissed if a k-9 scratched my truck I would want the damaged fixed but since it's LEO's I highly dought that those damages would be taken care of.

The cop didnt do anything wrong are you KIDDING ME???????????? How about he did everything wrong. Drunk people act the same way? Is speaking coherently one of those things? Oh yeah a younger less experienced cop would have handled it way better. Are you kidding me??? How about you cops use police insticncts and not infringe upon the rights of others, and not have a cattle line to do your jobs for you. How about you dont take advantage of the fact you wear a uniform instead of using it as an intimidation factor. Jesus Christ this is what is going into law enforcement?

The border patrol in yuma woke up my infant son, whom had just fell asleep, at a check point while on a road trip to search my vehicle. They emptied my SUV completely of a weeks luggage because the dog was "alerted". The dog ended up eating half a sandwich I'd put in the back seat. I had to re-pack, to include putting the car seat back in, my suv in the yuma heat with a screaming baby. I was polite, had DOD stickers and did everything they asked. So I have an pre determined opinon of check points. But the kid was a dick, don't blame the cop.

I'm not a K9 handler, but I'm pretty sure the part in the video about making the dog show a false alert just because he jumped on the car was wrong. The driver was obviously trolling for police to do something to him (hence the video camera), and he wanted to add a little drama about the cops promoting false alerts to get his point across.
I don't know that the officer did anything illegal, but he certainly could have explained things better. Starting a conversation with yelling at a person when they aren't a threat and haven't broken the law won't help the situation. A very small percentage of officers tend to be a little too aggressive for various reasons, and he seems to be one of them.
People need to stop taking their frustration out on individual officers if they don't like DUI checkpoints and start contacting their lawmakers for change.

These threads are getting a little old, and they attract the same simpletons with a chip on their shoulder, like RyanBjoutin. It makes TW a little less enjoyable.
The driver should have filed a complaint with the department or state, but of course he has an agenda regarding DUI checkpoints. Now we get to hear all the internet lawyers throw their thoughts into the mix. Yay.

    Right on.

I would like to know if the dog really did scratch the car? Just because the dog jumped on the door, and looks like he was on the hood. That dose not mean the car was scratch.

I have had a dog jump up on my door(not a police K9) and could not find any scratches.

I fell your pain Jay. I've done security details in the navy. If someone isn't a people person you don't put them on the last call gate watch. But as a cop in CA you have to make sure your safe first. Thats why I give every cop the benefit of the doubt at first when they are agressive. The cop is also just a guy/girl who has to deal with the same crap we deal with.

I agree. I think 100 younger cops could have done beter, and not yelled at him and also told him why he needed to pull to the side. In fact I have personally seen younger cops do better!

The only time I wouldn't be compliant with an officer is if he wanted to search my vehicle after I was completely compliant with his requests to see ID and all that. When I am stopped by an officer I instantly think of how many idiots he's probably had to deal with this/that night and treat them as respectfully as possible. Yes, sir, no sir, engine off, dome light on, hands on the wheel, wait to be instructed before reaching for things, etc.

The kid was likely one of those whiney, the fascist system is out to get me, waah, types, trying to start something BUT that is just something officers are inevitably going to have to put up with . . . people. Leo can't flip his lid because someone is being disrespectful. I've seen a cop get spit on, right in his face, and he kept his cool and took control of the situation. If you have temper problems, you shouldn't be working with people like this until you figure them out.

I'm not a police officer but I've done checkpoints in Afghanistan with people who don't even speak english and it is a huge pain, people are a huge pain. But it would be very unprofessional of me to flip my lid and yell at them. At the end of the day an officer IS held to a higher standard than an every day citizen IMO. My men had to conduct themselves as professionals in dealing with people who most likely were plotting to kill them. I don't see why one cannot act professional with a young punk whipper who thinks he's clever.

At the end of the day, they both just need some behavior modification haha not all this extreme generalizing or political mumbo jumbo, just man-to-man life lessons, people.

Whimpy? Dont recall saying anything about that actually know you have a hard job, i come from a family of retired cops. But since you brought it up. Why is it that i see on the side of the road, what looks like a routine traffic stop for speeding, 3 police cars show up? Make allot of sense to me. Uh ohh the little old lady on the cell phone might be a threat! Also i did a deployment in Afgan and Iraq, so im sure your ride along would be fascinating and action packed right? And why would i care if your in Reno is that an intimidation tactic?
