I'd like to be able to power a shop vac from my bed outlet. The outlet is limited at 400W, and most vacs are rated at 3hp+ (1hp = 745W).

However, this vac is rated 1hp peak:

So, I'm wondering if I could swing it, so long as I don't bury the vac head in dense carpet (which is when the load on the electrical motor picks up). It shouldn't be drawing the full 745W when you are just skimming over surfaces, and they probably "fudge" the rating upwards a bit.

Has anyone had any luck with a shop vac off the bed outlet?

Alternatively, is it feasible to change the current-limiting behavior from "shut off if overdrawn" to, "continue providing only 400W"? Most motors can run just fine on a lower power level.

I was also thinking about getting a compressor for re-inflating my tires. Most 12V compressors I've seen are pretty slow- is this due to limited power transfer over 12V, or compact size leading to small compression chamber?

I think it should be no problem to power a 120V compressor; the sticker on this one says 0.75 Amps:

    http://www.amazon.com/Bon-Aire-i8000-Goodyear-120-Volt-Inflator/dp/B003XGYDE2

(The bed outlet provides roughly 3.3A)

What do other people use for tire inflation? Not bicycle pumps I hope?

Quick update: I got the compressor I linked (http://www.amazon.com/Bon-Aire-i8000-Goodyear-120-Volt-Inflator/dp/B003XGYDE2). I like it, it is pretty fast and quiet.

For a vac, I went ahead and got the armorall vac (http://www.amazon.com/ArmorAll-AA255-Utility-Wet-Vacuum/dp/B003M2F7NI/ref=pd_cp_hi_0) and happily enough, it works just fine on the bed outlet- although I have been trying to avoid getting the nozzle stuck, which is when the motor is under the most load.
