How would you shorten the bumps? I plan on getting SuperBumps soon but will also be getting Expo's in 2 years or so.

I'd just cut the standoff tube down and reweld them. May not be necessary. Just gotta stroke out the suspension and make sure you are bumping at a happy place for the leafs and shocks and not giving up any travel

 

I have the Dakars with the extra

$77 D29xl Leaf Spring

D29xl leaf. They seem to be inbetween the Allpro standards and expos. I got about 3.5 inches of lift from them.
My shocks are the extended travel icons supposedly they have 10 inches of travel.
Tomorrow I plan on trying to cycle the leafs to see exactly where it's at.
Right now I have 5 inches of chrome showing on the shock and 3.5 inches between the bumpstop and the contact plate. So that effectively gives me 1.5 inches of compression of the bump before the shock bottoms out. I'm thinking I may need to shim up the bump depending on how much it is supposed to compress to keep the shocks from bottoming out.
Anyone have an idea about how much the wheeler bumps compress?

 

Flex it out and compress the bump for a rough estimate. Disassemble the leaf pack and mock up the leaf pack thickness for more accurate numbers. You may still have shock shaft showing at bump but keep in mind leaf negative arch. You have to keep the leafs and shocks happy. Adjust the bump up or down. If its "close enuf" call it good. It's a dd truck that makes you smile more on the weekends.

I have a pretty good assortment of air tools. Been a long time since I used an actual hand file
To clearance the ubolt washers I used a high speed angle grinder with sanding discs to clearance it only had to take off about 1/8 of an inch. Mind you that I did not use the nuts that AP sent with my ubolts. I grabbed some grade 8 nylocs from my work and used them instead along with washers. The nuts that come with the AP ubolts flare out at the bottom acting a bit like a washer and it seems to be a bit wider than what I used so you may have to do a bit more grinding.

Another note that may be important. The holes in my flip plate were drilled and tapped by me. So the spacing of the bump stop holes may be different than what AP puts on the plate plus my bet is that they used a standard thread bolt and I used metric. The reason for this is that AP did not have the tapped plates in stock at the time I ordered them so I just had them send me the plates without holes because I'm an impatient fuck and want my stuff now plus I have the resources and know how to do it myself which helps out a lot. Regardless of where AP locates their holes there is plenty of room on the superbumps plates to put the holes.

When I drilled and tapped the holes in the plates I used a M10 bolt that had 1.25 thread pitch. I think the length was 25mm. I also used a washer and a lock washer under the head at installation and used blue loctite. I went that extra mile because the bolt can not extend out of the plate hole so i wanted to make sure it would be difficult for it to back out. Length of the bolt is important because if its too long it will bottom out on the top of the leaf pack before it tight, so you gotta make sure the bolt is long enough to grab enough thread but short enough not to bottom out before its tight. You could actually do all of this (installing the bumps to the plates) before you install the plates on the truck and if the bolt extends past the bottom of the plate just grind it flush and your good to go.

The holes I drilled thru the superbump plate were probably about 1/2 inch in size which is about .10 over the size of the M10 bolt. Gave me enough wiggle room in case my measurements were off.
I made this all harder because my plates were installed before the bumps. An ideal situation would be to have the plates and the bumps on a workbench and you could just clamp the bumps onto the plates mark the holes thru the back side of the flip plates and drill away. Heck if you have a steady hand you could even use the flip plates as a drill guide but be careful to not hit the threads in the holes with your drill bit and mar up the threads.

Ok i'm getting a bit long winded about this process. It is actually an easy process once you get done you'll be goin to yourself...all that worry for nothin.

Ok here is my idea flexin the suspension in order to figure out the height my bumps need to be at.
1. Head to the dirt. I'm likin' the 2 tone paint job there



2. Find a big rock to climb



3.Crawl underneath and take a picture



Well as you can see from the pic. There is about 1 inch of shock travel left when the bump first makes contact with the bump plate.
I'm thinkin that a 1 to 1.5 inch spacer underneath the bump stop should be good. the leafs are close to being flat here...probably should have takin a better pic. I'm sure if the shock travels that extra inch the leaf would be completly flat.
Anyone else have an opinion here on what they would do from this point??

I ran from Lake Elsinore all the way up Main Divide to Santiago peak and down Silverado canyon today. The front bumps are soooo much better.

Aired back up here and drove home.

Supposedly the rear bumps are different from the fronts. More dense from what I read so there is less compression. That vid only shows the fronts.

The picture is deceiving as far as the arch goes it is not quite flat if you see it in person.

 

Oh. I just showed the video for the fronts because I thought the rears were made out of the same material.

So are you gunna raise the bump stops a little bit to protect your super gnar gnar icons?

 

In the pics you look like you might be right on. There appears to be about an inch of shaft remaining and the leafs could flex more without too much frown. I can't imagine those bumps compressing more than about an inch. Throw one in a vise and mash it, see how far it goes

 

What a brilliant idea!!! Tomorrow the bump gets the mash test! Well tomorrow night at work. I don't have a vise here at home big enough to do that. But the bonus of doing it at work is if I need a spacer I can machine one right on the spot!

Haha, I don't slay people's pets but I agree, they gotta go. You will have a soupy mess of duck shit to clean daily if you allow them to stay.
Chances are they will move on soon if they are indeed wild ducks, in that case, free game, ill see em in the fall.

 

Yup they are wild...the hatched in the hedge along my back wall. Nest was tucked way back there and I never saw it. Had i'd seen it, it would never have got to this point.
