when driving over rough terrain, like a rock parking lot and turning, it transfers through the steering wheel substantially.

Also, if feels like when it hits a bump, it loses power if i'm trying to turn sharper.

i'm not going very fast at all, maybe 5-10 mph

is this normal? this is my first IFS 4x4.

I have the same feeling. Just driving in 2-wheel drive on washboard roads or cross cattle guards it almost feels like manual steering (not power steering).

I also have this. The steering wheel turns itself when i hit a bump in the road. More than other cars i have driven. Could it be because of my lift?

i was in 2wd, oem suspension

that's how it felt, like it was non-power steering.

I've always found the tacomas and my 4runner before that, feel like they have a loose steering wheel on rough roads, like there is lots of play in it or something.

The new ones also have the VSC which will play with the brakes when you turn tight on gravel or it senses any kind of sliding or skidding. That may be adding to the strange feeling on the steering wheel.

It is normal for the Tacoma, but that does not mean it is good.

My 13 does the same thing. It transmits a lot of feedback up thru the steering wheel. I have never noticed a "clunking" feel or sound but it feels as if something is almost loose. Mine also will shake the steering wheel quite badly just driving down the freeway, mostly at or around 60MPH. I've had it into the dealer twice for this and they claim nothing is wrong and said they rebalanced the tires. I don't know if this falls under the lemon law by back rules but I'm starting to get realllllllllllly sick of this steering wheel shake!!!!!

just means your front tires arent gripping whatever you're going over and they're moving around the terrain and not over it, try airing down when you're off roading and engaging 4x4
