33 inch tires like my 265/75R16 (or 265/70R17) are fine on a stock driveline with my stock 3.73 gears. If I was into serious crawling where I needed the added torque I would got to 4.56 gears and still be okay for highway use. Personally I need highway capability more that heavy duty crawling so I am sticking with my 3.73 gears.

If you go to 35" tires (285/75R16) then a re-gear becomes more important so you still have the grunt to climb over stuff slowly. I feel the higher ratios have most benefit in giving you better control at low speed and in this case 5.29 gears are even better if running 35 or 37 inch tall tires.

But for sure you need the same ratio in both front and rear differentials otherwise you are wasting power and loosing traction all the time, and on hard pack or pavement you will break something pretty quick!

Could be wrong... you'd have to check my math but I think the 265/75/16s are actually less than 32"... 31.5 or something

    the 285/75/16's are 33"

Unless you want to damage your transfer case, NEVER select different ratio gears for your diffs. You want the same in the front and the rear.

And yes, 265/75R16 are equal to 31.6 inch tires.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I plan on going with 4.56's in the future. Would I be fine running 285/70/17 duratracs on stock gearset?

I've had 295/70/17 on my truck for 60k with stock gearing, no issues.

Yes, just a little more sluggish and your mpg will take a hit.

Hey, thanks for the correction on my 265/75R16 Dura-Trac tires. A mild 31.6" tall but they do me well (so much better than the General street car tires that came on the truck) with stock 3.73:1 ratio differential gearing.

I ran 285/75r16 for 70k miles. Half with stock gears then regeared to 4.11. More power (strength) after regear.

Read the article, and yes, I would have to agree that a SMALL amount of difference might not be as BAD of a concern, but numbers can say a lot, real world application is where the truth is. 1% is not much at all, agreed. Admittedly I grew up in the wheeling world under 100% mechanical transfer cases with direct drive, and it was always a rule to never use different ratio gears. New tech has a bit more allowance, so yeah, as the article shows, 1-2% MIGHT be ok. I just figure get the same since they are usually equal in price anyway. Why take the chance?

Most transfercases have been pretty similar in design to ours for a long time. Part time, aluminum case, chain driven, direct drive with a low range option. The way you shift them maybe be a bit different but pretty similar. If anything the cast cases with gear drive were stronger and could hold up to abuse like that better -- NP205 for example. Just saying... You're right for our application, mixing gears isn't likely to happen but if you happened to find a deal on some very close but different 3rds, you could run em. That's all I'm saying.

Right, as long as the difference was never more than 2%. So no running 5.13 in the back, and 4.11 in the front! lol.
