Hey everyone, new member here. I've owned my Tacoma for close to 3 years now, and love it. Haven't had any issues luckily.

But now I'm noticing that my clear coat just above the driver side door is starting to peel.

I don't have the funds to go in and get it all re-done (Unless someone knows of a place that can do this for low cost & good quality..?). I'm considering doing some light sanding on the peeling portions, and lightly spraying on some clear coat. Does anyone have any experience doing this, or advice?

A co-worker who is much more car-smart than I warned that I'll have to make sure that the clear coat I use is compatible with the red under-coat, though I have no idea how to figure that out... I sure don't want to end up with a bigger problem than I stared with!

    Thanks!
    Dave

    Welcome!
Is your paint shiny under the missing clearcoat? If so, that panel has been repainted but prepped poorly- what you are seeing is the re-paint peeling off the factory finish. If it's dull, you have clear peeling off base (color) coat.
No easy fix- start by taking compressed air and blow the loose edge to dislodge as much as will let go. Feather the new edge with 600-800 grit if you want to spot clearcoat it. Prep the surrounding area with red Scotchbrite to avoid a repeat problem later. Don't spray past the prep scratches. Polish it after it dries with a medium grit polish on a machine.
Use 2k aerosol clear if you can find it. Cured finishes can have almost anything sprayed over them without too much trouble.
Option 2: Spray off whatever comes loose every time you wash it and just live with it... there's still paint on it, so it won't rust
