I just done a compression test on my 99 Tacoma w/ 145000 miles. The numbers where as follows: 185 185 182 180 170 200. Is this good or bad. Need a new engine or what. Thanks for any info

Compression check, checks the seal between the cylinder wall and the rings and around the valves. You wouldnt need a new engine, just some new piston rings or a valve re-lap.

I dont know the numbers what is bad or not but to me they dont look awful.

Why were you doing a compression check in the first place was it running rough?

not suppose to be more than like 20 psi between your highest and lowest reading

I have the numbers for the v6 from the 2003 manual. Sorry, don't have the 99 manual. So as a point of reference, compression should be 174 psi or more, with 145 psi minimum. The difference between cylinders should be 15 psi or less.

Just found the 2003 4 cylinder numbers. They are 178, 127, 14. Again, as a point of reference.

All the above plus I would suspect that 200 reading. If the seal for the spark plug tube was bad, some oil could have dripped into the cylinder when the plug was removed. Did you notice any oil on the base or threads of the plug for that cylinder? This would help seal up the rings a tad and give a false reading.
A squirt or 2 of oil is intentionally added to the cylinders on a "wet" compression test to help determine if ring seal is the problem after a low reading on a "dry" test.

    Just a thought.

    +1 ^

Make sure you're throttle is wide open and all plugs are out as well, fresh battery always helps too!

Ithas been running rough for a while. Done a tune up first. No improvements. It is also very weak and 8-9 mpg which it has to turn 35,s so no surprise there. I was just curious on the compression. All plugs were dry and bat was fresh. Thanks guys for all the info. I really want to do a 4.8l or 5.3l Chevy swap.
