My last truck was a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500. I frequented TurbodieselRegister.com and got the idea there to remove the ABS sensor and inject grease into the sealed hub/bearing assembly on that truck.

This weekend, I installed the ECGS from differentail bushing. I removed the ABS sensor to avoid damaging it and couldn't help but see the similarites in construction to my dodge.

For anyone who has changed the front wheel bearings on these trucks and has had the hub apart, is the ABS sensor hole open to the bearings?

If so, has anyone tried greasing the factory bearings by injecting grease? I realize there is a danger to introduce dirt or incompatible grease by doing this, but with a litte care and some research, this my be a way to extend the life of the factory bearings.

Our bearings are sealed and greasing it doesn't help anything. They are sealed and you can not add grease to the bearings itself(after the hub is installed). Same goes for the dodge bearings. They're sealed all you're greasing is two flat metal surfaces.

Nope, you can put some grease there it will help for seal but otherwise will do nothing.
You would have to unbolt hub with the bearing then lift the rubber seal and try using needle on grease gun to get some grease to bearings.

EDIT: disregard! thought this was for first gens.

just snapped a pic of one of the spindles i have sitting on my workbench (anyone want to buy them?)... and i don't think it will work.

    here's the pic:

you're looking at the spindle from the outside... the ABS sensor hole is outside the bearing and the bearing itself is sealed. pretty much any grease you put in there is just going to wreak havoc on the ABS sensor and ring.

No good for the bearings, but will this prevent rust on the tone ring and maintain ABS reliability?

Or... at least keep the ABS working, or not working, the same way it does from the factory?

When I did it on the dodge, the tone ring was visable through the hole. It was pretty easy to get 4 to 5 pumps in there while rotating the wheel. I never had any issues with ABS functionality or with the seals. I don't know if the grease actually reached the bearings however. Ran the first set till 75K when I rebuilt the front end (ball joints, u-joints, hub assembly, etc. ). I mainly needed to replace the upper and lower ball joints, but replaced the other components when I had it apart. Sold the truck at 150K.

Thanks for the pics. I agree the grease might not reach the bearings, but it may help with water infiltration into the hub?

    :notsure:

Tone ring is a magnetic inductance sensor, grease shouldn't bother it. The tone rings also appear to be coated in a rubber substance so I don't believe you'll have any issues with corrosion.
