Does Tacoma have any competition in double cab 4-cyl market?

Does Tacoma have any competition in double cab 4-cyl market? Just looking for a truck with maximum utility and fuel economy, not necessarily power. In order of preference:

double cab
high mpg
4x4
long bed

It would be nice to have all, but I don't think there is a 4-cyl diesel/hybrid out there.

I am noticing from toyota's website that the 4 and 6 cylinder get very similar mpg anyway, maybe 10% difference

Also I wouldnt throw around the word hybrid with the word truck, people will get their man panties ll wadded up. Toyo-boost would be a better term

I don't understand why a diesel hybrid truck hasn't been built. The most fuel efficient vehicles have been small (geo metro), with small engines (geo metro), or hybrids (prius), or diesels (jetta tdi). Why not combine these?

A truck does not have to have a huge towing capacity to be useful. Most people just want something to haul furniture or fishing gear with, or maybe pull a small trailer. Besides, electric motors and diesels both have better torque than gasoline. I'd bet a TDI has enough power to compete with today's small trucks in terms of work capacity.

Prius averages about 50 mpg, Jetta TDI about 45. Combine the technologies and put it in a truck, should be able to average at least 50 mpg. Small trucks couldn't be THAT much heavier. Maybe it's the difference in rear end or transmission that limits trucks to 20-25 mpg. Maybe I'm just ignorant and don't understand why this has not been done!

Now if Toyota could find a way to satisfy the EPA and get the Hilux diesel engine in a DCSB, I'de be on that like a duck on a june bug!

 

check out toyota.co.uk. and look under 4x4 cars and check out the hilux. 36 mpg for the 3.0 and 38mpgs for the 2.5 liter. Looks like they could change a thing or two to satisfy epa and get that engine over here in the states.

Conversion is about 0.83 so we're looking at 32mpg combined. That's better than any truck I've ever seen here in the US. It's a great starting point. How do we create demand for this thing?

 

You need to make it go from 0-60 in under 10 seconds, cost the same as the V6, and you need people to stop remembering how bad US diesels were in the 70's. Oh and make diesel fuel cheaper than gas. Should be easy right? I would love one too but I don't see it happening.

Toyota's Hino division makes diesel hybrid commercial medium-duty trucks. Biggest barrier to a diesel hybrid consumer-grade pickup is probably cost.

You can compare existing price deltas between the normal Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, then compare between the Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 and EcoDiesel. Now stack the two deltas together. Would you pay $12k more for a diesel hybrid Taco? How many decades would it take to get a return on investment?

 

the D4D would be nice! also diesel price need to come down, it use to be a lot cheaper then gas. and it burns a little cleaner as well.

I don’t really like the hybrid tech in a truck. it will lower hauling and towing quite a bit IMHO. then i would have to get a much bigger truck to tow what i would need/want to.

I love the fact the taco is so small compared to other trucks now, and can still tow 6500lbs.

 

Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee already started to offer a VM Motori diesel. They have no known drawbacks compared to the gas versions except a high sticker price. If they sell well, expect other mfrs to follow. The Grand Cherokee is an interesting one - 420 lb-ft of torque with a low-range transfer case and 8-speed transmission (i.e. short 1st gear). The thing will win any redneck tug-of-war.

 

also I would not want any less power in a DCSB or DCLB. the v6 is just enough power, more would be nice, but i’m not going to spend the money on a supercharger.
