So, I got a check engine light.

    OBD-11 code PO-500 comes up.

Only problem that I've seen is when the cruise light is on, occasionally the cruise won't set. And a few times (only when I've just got on the road) it would set, but kick off leaving the cruise light flashing.

I've purchased a speed sensor and switched it with the NT and then the SP2 sensors in the transmission. Reset the check engine light and drove only to have the light return within 25miles or less.

The check engine light will rarely reset its self, but sometimes it does.

After some online research I've found that the NT and SP2 speed sensors on the transmission seem to be more for shifting and engine torgue control?

I know that there are speed control sensors at each wheel. I thought these were for vehicle skid contol only?

So my main question is what speed sensor does the cruise control use to recognize vehicle speed?

Does anyone have any helpful experiences that might help me with this?

:) Welcome to the Forum. After reading your post about your code, I looked up some information in my Haynes emission control manual. You have replaced the common item that would cause the code. I would look at the wires that go the transmission connector for the Speed sensor. You may have a broken wire, or a short in the wiring. I would also look at your cruise control wiring also to see if any wires are causing a short. You should also look at your cruise control switch on the steering column and check those wires also.
This will not be an easy thing to trace, are you familiar with using a multi meter to check for power at your connector and to check for wiring problems? I hope this helps a little bit. Good Luck.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and look up the information.

I have found nothing online definitively telling me that the two tran sensors are where that the cruise takes speed input from. However I found another forum thread on here where one person indicates that it uses the 2 front ABS speed sensors (for what that's worth). The right front and back side of the truck use different part # sensors than the left front and back side of the truck, so I'm going to switch the sensors curently on the front to the back and see if anything changes. Don't expect much on this, but worth a try.

One more thing I've seen in the way of wiring that I suspect is the Spiral Cable (which is under recall) in the steering wheel. I know it can cause cruise issues but haven't seen anyone say that it made their check engine light come on also.
