Hey folks, I have a 2002 tacoma doublecab trd and started noticing a strong smell coming from the seats that is a cross between urine and plastic (best i can come up with). I bought the truck second hand so I cant guarantee it hasnt been peed in, but im pretty sure it wasnt me. Its only in the front seats and is pretty plastic smelling, which I figure is something leeching or such. I was just wondering if anyone has similar issues or I need new seats. Thanks for your time!

Yeah, a steam clean may help, I have tries sprays and carpet fresh but to no avail. I picked up some seat covers a while back but the fit was awful and they went back.

Go to a pet store and get the stuff for removing urine smells from pet accidents. Also available at most grocery stores.

Soak the crap out of it, and it will neutralize almost any smell. Give it plenty of time to dry out before sitting on it.

He's referring to enzymatic cleaning solutions. Which you could definitely try. Test a small area first because they may discolor the fabric.

Steaming would be cheaper and faster, though. If you don't have one, buy one. They're great for cleaning the entire house and vehicles. If money is tight, buy it, use it, return it.

I rented a carpet cleaner from Lowes and used the upholstery attachment. Soaked each seat down, scrubbed it with a brush, then sucked it out. Got lots of brown liquid. I didn't have a pee smell to get rid of, just a stale dirty smell. It worked great and no odd smells now.

Try using the sprays the rleete recommended and then suck it back out with the carpet cleaner machine.

Cheaper to buy enzymatic solution meant for carpet cleaning at the rental location, in that case.

Pet spray is expensive and you would need a good amount to soak the seat material properly.

Cost per ounce expensive, anyway. Spray bottles are $9+ and refill bottles without spray head are $15+.

Thanks for the suggestions, I figure I will rent a steam cleaner and see if it helps and go from there. I just discovered this forum and I am amazed at the wealth of information, kudos to everyone who takes the time to answer questions. I have a 2002 doublecab with 335,000 km and still going strong, so I decided to repay the old girl by fixing a few little things that I have been putting off, starting with the smelly seats. I am also planning to pick up some seatcovers without breaking the bank and then maybe some mods. Thanks again for your replies and happy driving!
