Discovered this the other morning  ahhhhhhh! ahhhhhhh! ahhhhhhh! :help:

Okay, I guess the world will keep turning, but WTF! Truck has less than 80K and I drive like a grampa.

For all the amateurs out there *cough* who probably spent the better part of an hour (*cough* two hours *cough*) trying to decipher the FSM diagram; fin-a-gle two screwdrivers through that unbelievably small access port; dial back the brake pads; and remove the drum; meet your enemy. Face-to-face, Mano-a-mano.

    Other (potentially relevant?) Details
    (1) I changed my rear differential fluid at 75K miles back in May (did a bunch of towing in the months prior and it was looking super black). Used 75-90, cheap dinosaur oil from Autozone.

    (2) Checked the fluid today, it still looks new and the differential is quite full.

    (3) When I removed the rear differential "fill" plug I heard a loud "hissing" noise. Didn't notice that last time.

    (4) Photo of the passenger side wheel, ran out of daylight for drum disassembly. Also, difficult to tell it anything is leaking?

    Questions:
    (1) I'm having trouble finding a DIY for a 2nd. Gen Tacoma, any ideas about how on-point these DIYs are? http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/rear_axle/oil_seal/

    (2) Parts! Inner and outer oil seals, wheel bearing, brake hardware and pads... anything else?

    (3) Should I do the passenger side?

A couple of thoughts. Could the hissing sound possibly be related to a plugged vent? Maybe the leakage is due to pressure build-up in the housing.

Whatever is the cause, I would not tinker with the other side. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I will say this. You will need new brakes shoes and they come in pairs, and when doing brakes you do both sides. Your going to have to drain the diff again also. Along with the fact that you have high miles, and the one side is already bad. I'd do both sides since some of the work will be done already and you'll have some of the parts for that side anyways.

Here is a thought if you don't replace the pass side seal. You add new diff fluid and use the new brake shoes on that side. Then in say 4 weeks that side goes bad. Guess what, that money and time saved for not doing it with the other side just bit your ass. Not worth copping out in my opinion, do both sides at the same time. Seals are cheap.

@That Dude Tim, wise advice. Makes a lot of sense. Given what azreb said about the breather, do you think replacing that might stop the leak? Or is that seal likely shot?

The hissing is your breather being plugged which probably caused the seal to start leaking well. Make sure it's the axle seal and not the wheel cylinder. Clean your breather then replace the seal. I'd do both.

It could be possible that diff breather has clogged and the diff pressure built up to cause the drivers rear seal to leak. Unlikely in my opinion though.

If it smells like diff fluid it's the seal. Brake fluid and diff fluid smell differently. I'd get a new breather, 2 new axle seals, plus the other necessary stuff like shoes, diff fluid, etc.

Edit: on top of the 2 Toyota axle seals you'll need 2 o-rings that are on the axle sub-assembly also.

I appreciate the input. In the process of assembling a parts list.

I'll post it up tomorrow to make sure I covered everything. Thanks again.

Funny thread.. To fix your leak you going to have to press new bearings as the seal that's most likely leaking the is the one that is mates to the wb.

I tried getting you the Toyota part number for that o-ring off alldata but it didn't have one. It shows it and says to replace with a new one but doesn't have it listed with the axle seal under parts and labor.

Axle seal OEM part # 9031058003

U can get the axle seal from Smyth, rock auto or even oreily / autozone may have it. I paid something like $10.0 each for mine. But I'm telling you that won't fix your leak. U will still have to press on a wheel bearing. I've blown my on both side so I'm telling you from experience

Looks pretty good. Might want a few other opinions from others to have a glance. Good luck if your doing it yourself.

Thanks, any idea if that "brake shoe assembly kit" includes parts/pads for both sides?

Is that a Toyota kit or one from another parts supplier? Usually a brake hardware kit includes hardware for both sides. Only things that are per side are the self-adjusters, because those are side specific.

I'm pricing / plan to buy through ToyotaPartsZone.com. Bought some parts from them in the past and was happy with the price and shipping speed.

They list a several "kits" under the "Rear Brake Drum" section, as follows:
-Reaction Plate Kit, Rear Brake, Lh -- 04955-08030 -- $21.86
-Reaction Plate Kit, Rear Brake, Rh -- 04954-08030 -- $21.86
-Shoe Kit, Rear Brake -- 04495-04010 -- $56.43 (Manufacture Notes: Mark Nbk D9033)???
    -Spring Kit, Rear Brake -- 04942-45010 -- $54.21
-Spring Kit, Rear Brake Shoe Hold Down -- 04941-45010 -- $22.08
    -Strut Kit, Rear Brake -- 04943-04010 -- $58.66

Besides the "shoe kit," what else must I buy?
