I just moved my 285/70/17 good year mtr to the spare tire location under the truck. It's a very tight fit, to say the least. I haven't driven truck so I don't mine if it will hit the diff. Here's what it looks like...
    77670bf6a9a10795c210aa82ed728f92_zps2a2d_15220501e89d0ae35c1797c5a9292a00f2be05d2.jpg

I had to let quite a bit of pressure out of the tire to get it by the shackle mount. It's wedged in really tight and shackle mount does make significant contact with one of the lugs on the tire tread. There's about 1/4 inch between the tire and the exhaust.

I thought before I drove it I'd get some opinions.

    Thanks

    I vote no.
Too close to too many things that can mess it up.
The exhaust moves more than 1/4" and may melt a bit of the tire.
Diff looks like it will hit.
put some tape on the tire where it is close to the diff and try some speed bumps to see if it hits.
    Good luck.

The exhaust won't be a problem as far as melting is concerned. Too far from the engine

My concern is how are you going to get it up and down with less air pressure in it? you are essentially just carrying around a flat spare tire with you....

Vulcanized rubber does not melt easily 400C plus. So I wouldnt worry about the tail pipe much. The diff rubbing I would do more looking into. And how much did you have to air down? If you carry a compressor no worries. Other wise its just another flat waiting to happen..

Have you ever felt a blown tire from a truck during a race? They get soooo hot. The tailpipe at the end is like 275degrees i would guess.

Thanks for the replies. The tire is wedged in there pretty tight, to say the least. I've got it down to about 12 lbs. I carry a compressor at all times so I can get air back into the tire after it is on the ground. It's is about 1/4" away from the heat shield so I think any effect from heat will be minimal.
My primary concern is the tire being so close to the differential. Especially if the plug comes up and hits the lugs on the tire. I put some blue masking tape over the differential and will go out and run over some speed bumps this evening to see the extent of the contact.
I have a tire carrier but it takes up a lot of space in the bed and I'd like to be able to use the bed of the truck again.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I have SEEN spare tires underneath the bed have melted contact areas from exhaust being too close. Not just once, but on multiple trucks.

Do you guys think .250" is not enough clearance between the tire and the exhaust shield? I don't want my bedspace bad enough to ruin a $300 tire.

After driving to a pit, offroad, during a race, with a blown tire the tire shreds that remain will be extremely hot, so hot that they are hard to handle even with gloves. I think an exhaust pipe is cooler. I wouldnt be concerned with an offroad tire melting.

What melts easier a plastic bumper cover? Or a vulcanized offroad tire? Bc i have done and SEEN a hundred people have there muffler on the bumpers plastic allday everyday and the only thing that happens is a stain. Thats inlcuding track use cars like matt powers formula d car and autocross cars such as john burrows del sol. Im pretty sure the temps a tire deals with are more extreme than the back end of the exhaust. Search youtube for "exhaust melted my spare" not a lot of results.

I say just keep an eye on it. With a heat shield you will deflect a lot of the higher temps. Run it for a long drive or two and then check.

Put some tape on the shield and drive around if the tape isnt melted your tire will be safe. Really the tires dont melt bc they cant due to vulcanization they just get molten. Apparently you need to be in the 600°f range to have combustion

Tell that to the customers that we had with melted tires. There was obvious damage to the tires.
