I have a 2008 DCSB pre runner 4.0L. I've added DTLT headers to the OEM Y-Pipe and that leads to a Borla Cat-back exhaust. I had these pieces for about 4 years. Lately I've noticed a fast popping noise and exhaust fumes smell in my cabin when stopped at a red light. I'd assume there's a leak sonewhere but everything is snug tight. Any ideas? It's quite annoying and sickening as well. My thought was maybe a bad crush washer between the headers and Y-pipe but maybe it's the header gasket. A tone out there had this before or have a starting point? Thanks for looking.

You mean block the exhaust pipe tip? Will I be able to see it or will I need smoke to see the leak??

Also the fumes are really strong. I know that I'm only using 2 cats now instead of the original 4 but do you think that over the course if four years that the two remain cats are bad or no longer filtering the emissions properly? Thanks.

Most times headers tend to leak right between the header and the gasket or the gasket and the engine block. They make locking header bolts that keep them from leaking in this area. If this is the case a close inspection of that area should reveal soot/carbon deposits on the block or headers. I've had headers on a muscle car I own for the past 15 years and that is the only area they ever leaked. Gaskets can make a difference also.

Ok, so maybe new gaskets?? Where can I get these header lock nuts? That seems like a good idea regardless.

Anyway to check the cats to see if they need replacing?? If so I guess I just buy a new y-pipe?

Check Summit Racing. The brand they sell is Stage 8 Locking Fastners. For your Tacoma part # 6922. Cost $62.97 plus shipping. this is not the brand I have but they are the same style. Mine are from a company called Breslin that I believe invented them. They were bought out and soon others were selling them. Once you set them they don't back out or loosen but are easily removed and reinstalled if desired.

Great info. Good to know. I really appreciate this. Gonna try and investigate tomorrow for carbon residue.

Just looked up the part. Those are bolts that lock. Aren't the headers held on by nuts that attach to bolts that stick out of the block?
