I'm thinking his battery is done after 6 years.

Ya... mine is starting to scare me. No problems with it yet, but when these things die, they die and there's no bringing them back.
Mine is an '08 and I don't think it's ever been changed.

Every time for me it's been on a hot engine. Never been stranded at work or home.

'91 Escort. Worked all day, stopped to get something to drink about 30 miles from the job site, dead as a doornail. Parents lived close enough to give me a jump, drove it 2 blocks to Walmart for a new battery.

'94 Toyota p/u, stopped at Pep Boys to buy some oil (middle of the work day, had been driving from job-a to job-b).
Ended up calling my contractor to let them know I'd be late and went back inside for a new battery.

'06 Kawasaki Vulcan. Rode home from work, stopped at Walgreens 35 miles later for a drink and a smoke. Restarted, engine started, then died... noticed the clock was at 12:00 and the trip meter had reset. Cranked and started fine. Got it home, shut down, tried to restart, no dice.
Drove the cage to work the next day and my wife picked up a new battery from the local shop. Batteries generally go no more than 2-3 years on that bike.

She's killed two leaving her dome light on... my policy is when it's dead from a light on overnight, I'm not going to fuck with recharging it. Batteries don't like being deep cycled.
