Despite the issues, I still am happy with my 6-speed.

I enjoy the 6 speed manual. With 217k miles and no TOB issues, I am not sure I have any regrets.

no regrets here, but agree with the problems you listed... it's like 1st gear was designed assuming you will only take the truck wheeling and not for daily driving... which, ok, it's a 4x4, i get it, but when you make it the only v6 + manual trans option, people like me who never really off-road need a more normal 1st gear :(

I travelled from Portland, OR to Colorado Springs to find a TRD with a 6 speed. There was one closer, but my wife didn't like the blue.

My 1st gen. was a 5 speed. It had little problems, so does this one. it has been noted here--pedal creek, etc.

I don't know if what I have is referred to here as rpm hang, but the only thing I really hate with this one is the rpm idle will initially stop at 1500 or sometimes 1200 rpm. If your in gear and creeping forward or braking during for a stop, it's annoying. It forces you to stomp the clutch or you will be braking through throttle which will just wear out brakes. Once the truck stops, the rpm will drop to about 700.

Again, these are small issues. If they are available next time I buy a Tacoma (maybe there will be a next time, maybe I'll be dead before then) I will still choose the manual.

Then again, I drive airplanes for a living. I must have something for stomping on pedals all day.

I've gotten used to the rev-hang thing. I find that to avoid jerkiness, specially when going from 1st to coasting into a turn, I press the clutch while I'm still slightly on the gas. Then quickly let go of the gas. In my Miata I'll simply let go of the gas and then press the clutch. But in the truck it creates a jerky feeling and much more clutch noise if I'm not tighter on the transition.

Having said that. Because the truck is usually used only between 1,500-3,000 RPMs, being at the correct revs before upshifts or downshifts is a no-brainer. Unlike in the Miata where I could be anywhere between 1,500-7,5000 RPMS. In the Miata I have to be more precise to correctly rev-match to the appropriate RPM before a shift - since the needle is all over the place revving happy.

It almost sounds like you are describing the cold-start idle speed...?

Agreed, the drivetrain and the suspension might be truckish and a little sloppy, but the engine is pretty tight, throttle response is pretty sharp for a truck I think- both on and off.

I'm very happy with my 6spd.I hate the way the auto shifts. As for the TOB issue I have never heard or seen one fail and as a toyota tech I see tacomas every day. I have had the 6spd apart during training and compaired to other manuals I've had apart(Honda mitsu Isuzu GM) this is one stout trans. If someone has one completely fail they were beating the crap out of it.

Describing the TOB as a "ticking time bomb" is a bit extreme lol...

Only complaint is the 6th gear being too low. Other than that every thing is gravy
