Doesn't work too well on automatics unless you get yet another special tool that jams the flexplate against the starter bendix.

This is very true. I did use my homemade tool to torque the crank bolt back down. It took way less force to tighten it that to break it free.

...I've never been to Texas. Hmmm...;)

Honestly, if I had to do it again, I'd spring for the SST/Blue Point/Snap-On tool to save me the hassle of dealing with the AC Compressor / Bracket headache.

WOW!!! NEVER SAID I MADE THIS TOOL.. Just showing the proper TOOL.. Also I didn't know you had the stop watch out for my reply. I have a business to run and too much work. The bump method is used by lots of people and some mechanics.
There are a lot of mechanics that don't use the bump method they use the holding tool. Good luck with torqueing the bolt back on with the bump method. You still need to do that ya know. I see the bump method as a halfazz shortcut. Maybe you like to cut off your belts then use a screwdriver to pry on your new ones. I have seen many mechanics do that halfazz shortcut to save time. Does that make it the RIGHT way to change belts....
Sorry but I have been turning wrenches professionally for almost 25yrs owned my business 9yrs. I like to do my work to the highest level. It is not about just getting the job done. Its about doing the best possible job with the right tools and the best parts. So when I work on my truck I do the same no cutting corners. I don't care if you and everyone else here wants to do the bump method have at it. Personally I don't care. To me the best way is the only way.

How about anyone could see I didn't make that tool. I am no machinist nor do I have the tools to make such a tool. But I sure wish I did.
