I've got a dent from backing into a post pretty gently, so i think I'd be able to hammer it out... should I get a body hammer or do the 2X4's and hammer way? its a chrome bumper with just a quarter inch scratch in the spot, the actual dent is the size of a hand and less than an inch deep at most

That doesn't sound good. I had a similar thing happen to me with a 95 Dakota. I tried to hammer it out. It wasn't pretty. The chrome ended up cracking and the bumper started to rust. You're only alternative it to replace it unless someone has some better ideas. If you google you can get some prices on aftermarket bumpers. You should be able to get one for about $400. I feel for you because it doesn't take much to dent these things.

You might consider just banging the dents back out and then doing a proper covering with rattle can. That means primer, adhesion enhancer and all that stuff. BUT if you really like the chrome then I agree with the above

I don't believe your going to get that out without cracking the chrome. It's a lost cause. Get a new one and be done with it instead of doing all that work only to be let down in the end.

Doesn't hurt to try theres no reason to go buy a new one without trying to get it out.
