give me some audio insight

13 access cab
horrible sound (nothing new, right)

want to replace door speakers

would door speakers )component or 6x9 what's best) + amp be as much an upgrade as stock HU + aftermarket speakers?

i see 99% of people say putting rear door speakers in access cab is worthless....why is that?


if i get 1 amp and an 8" woofer would i need another amp (i think i do but available space says no)

i've done some research, but don't seem to find exactly what i'm looking for

Most guys replace their door speakers with 6.5" components. But I've also seen quite a few do 6x9s. If you're going to add a sub, I'd probably say to go with 6.5" components.

As far as the speakers+amp vs speakers+HU, I think you'd get better sound doing speakers+HU first. And then later on, add an amp for the speakers. I'm sure other people may disagree with me on this, but in my experience if the source of your sound (the HU) sucks, then it doesn't really matter a whole lot if you have the best speakers in the world. That sucky HU will put out sucky sound to those awesome speakers. Granted a set of awesome speakers will pick up some of the slack, but I think you'll get better performance from doing speakers+HU.

Adding rear speakers is entirely up to you. Some people like it, and others don't. Its just up to what you think sounds better. A lot of people say to don't add rear speakers to an access cab because it ruins the sound stage. If you've never heard of a sound stage in a car or speaker imaging read this. It's quick and pretty easy to understand. If you like the way it sounds with full-range speakers in the back, then by all means go for it.

Where are you planning to put the sub and amp? What speakers, sub, and HU are you looking at?

I don't mind the beating of horses here. I could talk about this stuff all day long.

I'd ultimately like to keep the stock HU since it integrates the whole system pretty well.


I was recommended alpine components as they are a good value.

i'd also entertain a 6" JL or sound ordinance

B-8PTD for something small and add a little bass


what about a small sub (or two) in the rear doors?

 

Like Riverdog said, Do HU and front speaker without an amp and see how you like it.

I put two Kenwood KFC-S6983 6x9 with a Sony headunit in my truck and I wouldnt want it any louder for mids and highs. Bass sucks thought thats why I'm building a sub box to put a 12'' in the back.

 

If you end up keeping your head unit, I have an audio control unit (lc6i) for sale. It will help you better tune your speakers while keeping oem hu.
As far as your immediate sound stage goes, the rear speakers dont do much to enhance it. Invest more in quality door speakers up front and an amp and you'll be much happier.
