I have a 2013 Tacoma double cab with about 1400 miles on it.
When I first start it and get down low near the drivers side front wheel and listen I hear a strange grinding/rev type sound with a stuttering on/off type rhythm that appears to be coming from somewhere on the low side of the engine. It sounds like too much friction for a part that is functioning normally.
With the window open, driving at slow speeds, and listening carefully I can also hear it. After the truck warms up (15 minutes or more) it is barely noticeable. Has anyone else noticed this? Any idea what part this may be? I plan on taking it to the dealer but would like to know if it is something to be concerned about before they do their best to tell me it's not.

Possible that the starter isn't fully dis-engauged?

Could be a bearing of some sort? Transmission input? These engines make a ton of noise so it could be something normal just being carried around..

I found a post with a similar problem after I made my first post. Starting in 2012 they added a "smog pump" for emissions. When you shut the truck off it makes a peculiar winding down sound somewhat similar to the noise I am hearing after starting. The post (don't remember post #) had a reply that mentioned the "smog pump" can also be heard after cold starts. What I am hearing is apparently normal for a 2013. I guess there have been quite a few post with a similar description to mine.
