Been lurking here for nearly 6 months planning my next purchase. Originally was interested in a AC v6 4x4 SR5. Even test drove a couple recently. Decided to wait 'til the 14's come out. Doesn't sound like earth shattering improvements. Maybe they'll throw in a minor improvement/feature or 2 as the model cycle winds down. Couldn't hurt to wait a few more weeks to find out.

Lately, I've been intrigued by the regular cab. Its just me and my wife. We have her SUV for long trips. I would have to add fog lights, cruise, int wipers.

Have scoured the forum. Found some info on my two biggest concerns below. But was wondering if anyone in the reg cab model could weigh in with their experience.

Comfort - I'm a short-legged 6'2" 200lbs with no back issues. Legroom wont be an issue. More importantly, is a 5-6 hour trip realistic in a bench?

Power - I'm not a speed demon by any means. But can the 4 cylinder comfortably pass on the interstate? Also, I had a '99 AC 4x4 4cyl and put 31 inch tires on it. The extra weight of the wheels/tires slowed the truck to a max speed of 72mph!! Are bigger wheels/tires a hindrance? I assume they would be to some degree.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance

I have a regular cab 4x4 pictured in my signature, I love it, it rides good and is capable on the beach. My only complaint would be the power, as you stated larger tires do make a difference. You can definitely feel it but for what I use the truck for its not a huge hindering.

I have the automatic so I have bucket seats. Combine the wetokle seat covers and it's a super comfortable ride.

I got the regular cab because of its barefoot style. I don't like all the electronics. Power door locks, windows cruise, wipers. That's all a luxury to me and I wanted something that had less a chance of anything breaking or going out in the far future.

It's still a very nice truck but the extended cab would be helpful for trips. Unless you plan on getting a bed cover.

    My 10 cents :)

I bought my first Tacoma a couple years ago. It was a 2012 base model regular cab. Silver, manual, 4X4. I liked the looks and simplicity of the regular cab. I also live in the city and park on the street, so it made parking easy.

I'm roughly the same size. Plenty of room, however, the fixed position of the bench seat becomes miserable after 45min-hour. Longest trip I ever did was 3 hours to WV, and in my opinion as a former regular cab owner, yes, it is doable, but no, it is not comfortable.

Where do you livee? the 4 banger might be perfect in Oklahoma or any other flat state, but I had to red line the crap out of mine to maintain highway speeds and pass going through the mountains of Western MD and WV. It simply didn't have the power that I wanted.

Yes, bigger wheels and tires will bog it down.

I'm now in a 2013 V6 SR5 4x4 Access Cab and I love it. It has the extra dry storage (which, like you, i wouldn't think i would need, but I did), the power of the V6 which is awesome, and the creature comforts like PW, PDL, touchscreen radio/blue tooth, reverse camera. It also has the bucket seats with adjustable back that are 20X more comfortable than the bench in the reg cab.

I have a reg cab 4x4 manual, I love it but I'm 6' 2" and that bench is bad. I'm going to look at a reg cab auto w/buckets tomorrow hope I can get it.

Really appreciate everyone's feedback. It has proven invaluable in my two biggest concerns which now compels me to step up the the AC v6. Most of my cars have been four cylinders, but sounds like this may be a bit underpowered. In addition, an hour of comfort at the most according to Hollywood Ball just won't cut it. Wish the buckets were optional on the 5-speed.

Thank you all once again for your help as it saved me from making an expensive mistake.

I just saw the press release for the '14. Might as well wait a few more weeks, then its off shopping!
