He'll flip sh*t when i tear the center out of his dash. It'll be fine. I know i need to do that but i'm half afraid to do it because i've broken to many toyota plastics in my day. Have you seen the problem before? I know nothing would've been discontected in the center of the dash when we installed the unichip behind the glovebox. Thank you, any advise to make the center easier to remove?

Yep per. This post on customizing a radio will help you get it out.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/au...iy-aux-input-2005-2008-factory-head-unit.html

Once you have it out, there are a few screws and clips that remove the radio from the faceplate, buttons, etc. My best GUESS is there are 2 connectors that bind the faceplate with the radio. I bet you had a clip pop and the connector isn't tight up against the face.

    Good luck to ya.

Much appreciated. I've had experience taking the back seat apart, taking door panels off, and taking door sills out (little stuff) and noticed in these experiences that toyota wants you to break the little yellow and white plastic clips that are every where. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if the radio didn't sit flush after this. But i'll learn as i go. Thanks for the luck, i'll need it as i don't poses much in the way of luck.

After checking the connectors, you can test the operation of the buttons, WITH THE AIRBAG DISCONNECTED, with an Ohmmeter. If the buttons function properly, suspect the head unit is faulty.
If the buttons are inoperative, suspect the clockspring.

My 2010 does similar things. It'll turn off sometimes when I try and change stations or half the screen will go crazy. And compared to my 08, my steering wheel controls don't work as good.

Anyone ever got the funky symbols and foreign letters on the display? Mine randomly ejects the cd when hit #1 or #2 preselect.

Mine does the random symbols every now and then. That's what I mean by going crazy and sometimes it'll turn off when I press 1 or 2 or the seek button. Never had this or any trouble trouble out of my 08 with the 6 disc though.

Wasn't there a TSB or some kind of campaign for late-model vehicles with dodgy head units?

Well sheeit....seems like toyota is making things destine to fail. Like i said, my 08's radio functions perfectly and i run aux in my 12v outlet for my ipod. I hope the aux port in the 2012 still works, though with the buttons not working, i don't think i can check. Hopefully i can try some stuff on thursday. If worst comes to worst i'll trade him trucks until i fix his. Thanks guys. And if i need an oem radio, i'll hit you up tacomatrdod. Thanks again.

A faulty ground can be blamed for most odd problems. If that's not the case... then it's the head unit.
I know there was a rash of cd player problems around 07, but those were warranty replacements.
