I saw an aftermarket one similar to that a few years ago that was made out of plastic

 

I would imagine it would inflict more damage to your own truck in a minor fender bender.

I had one similar to that on my Hilux in South Africa. It is steel with a plastic cover. There are composite ones available. They are "brush" guards to protect against branches and twigs, but if you run into a tree or rock you will obviously have damage to your truck, with or without the guard, whether it is steel, plastic, composite, it won't make a difference.

 

That looks neat, but if you need to take out the grill or headlight assemblies, it looks to be a bitch.
