Undercoating

Just traded my '04 4WD Tacoma for a '12 2.7L standard transmission 4WD Tacoma. I live in Park City Utah. Drive up and down I80 in snow and SALT! I just wanted opinions on having the new truck undercoated. Any brand recomendations etc.

Congrats on the new truck. I also purchased a similarly equipped Tacoma last Friday and am loving it. I posted a question about undercoating in a regional forum looking for a place to get it done in my area (Portland, OR). There are a ton of threads on this. Search around if you don't get a lot of responses - I didn't get any. From what I've seen Krown seems to be a popular aftermarket brand. A lot of folks just have the dealer treat it, but I've seen posts with very mixed results. Anyway, good luck and happy motoring.

I have a 2007 and I'm kicking myself for not getting it undercoated when it was new. If I could do it again, I'd have it done even though at 5 years the frame still looks pretty decent.

 

Hello. I work at an off-road shop part time and we are currently using Fluid Film as our brand for undercoating. You should see my five year old Tacoma in Maine (salt state).. Barely any rust.

 

Would you guys be able to blast and coat a 5 year old, untreated frame?

With fluid film there is no prepping required. Sounds funny, but this is a water resistant film grease that pentrates metal and prevent corrosion and oxidization. It must be applied once a year. I would recommend calling any off road shop that uses products like line-x, they probably can do it if they supply the product. I just bought a five gallon bucket from Amazon And applied it myself on a six year old untreated 4 runner, my uncles. With fluid film let it sit on your frame for four days beforei it comes in contact with water.

This will nourish and increase the longevity when it comes to preventing any further rust.

If you are going to undercoat it must be done when the truck is delivered new, if there is corrosion (rust ) your just covering up a problem, drive it from dealer to undercoat er first thing.

 

Look at getting an electronic rust prevention system. They'll run you a bit more than undercoating but you'll save the money in a couple years. We have them on all our vehicles and no complaints so far.
I can't remember the brand or the name of it off the top of my head though sorry.

I bought my 04 used and its frame is very clean but having read about Fluid Film I gave it a try this years winter which wasn't much.

How many times a year do you apply the film, as I wasn't too impressed when after a few rains it seemed to have all washed off.

Post some pic's of your frame please.

 

I went with a hot oil undercoating this time around.
There is a place down by where I grew up who's been applying it to vehicles for 40+ yrs & took an hr to apply.
My neighbor had sworn byusing a good bar&chain oil w/ a small amount of melted wax heated up & sprayed.
I saw his 10 yr old vehicle undercarriage & it sold me on it.
Its pretty popular in VT.

 

I want to apply fluid film on my frame. I saw fluid film spray can on Amazon.com and was wonder if it's any difference.

 

Undercoating only if its brand spanking new.
Then fluid film 2x a year, every fall & spring.

I suggest you read through this thread, OP. The did some pretty solid testing with various fluids and took lots of pictures for evidence. I've coated my truck with Amsoil HDMP. It smelled like crayons for the first few days, but I feel better having my frame coated.

If you plan on undercoating your truck yourself, look into picking up a can of Eastwood's internal frame coating. It's not for the coating itself, but the spray attachment that comes with it. I coated the entirety of my frame, inside and out, with the hose attachment and HDMP. Good luck with your frame, OP.
