I have a new 2013 Tacoma double cab with stock audio system (not JBL upgrade). This is my 3rd Toyota PU, 2nd Tacoma. In the previous two trucks the stock audio system needed replacement quickly. So I figured that would be the case with the new one too, but to my surprise the stock system is pretty decent. This has left me wondering what the audio system specifications are, but I have no idea where to find that. I did a rudimentary search with no success. Any assistance would be appreciated.
    all da best,

    Perhaps ignorance is bliss.
Other than the 2013 headunit being pretty nice with the touchscreen, bluetooth calling, etc. the actual sound quality IMHO is beyond bad. I've heard FAR superior audio quality out of 20k cars than my 32k truck.

The JBL is worth the upgrade i am glad I got it since it saves me a ton of time and money and I don't have to rip my truck up to put a better sound system in

Yes I agree. I have the stock, but I heard my friends 2012 JBL and it is quite nice. I think once I am done with my install it will be much better than the JBL, but it will take me a ton of effort ,not be OEM and cost me a ton more. So I agree JBL a worthwhile upgrade if you plan to keep it stock ,as it sounds great.

Have the touchscreen and heard they ungraded the sound systems in the 2013 and while not terrible is not what I want. If I upgraded the speakers to something around $200 a pair, would I notice a difference with the stock head unit? I upgraded a 2012 Mustang with JL C2 570's and it made a big difference as the stock upper speakers were the worst I had seen and wondering if the same is true in the 2013's with touchscreen..

i will be testing the factory system soon with an oscilloscope for amplifier output and RTA for system response. i think all the hate for the factory receiver is totally ungrounded. i believe it can be the centerpiece of a really nice system. i also think all these fancy Line Out Converters [lookin at you LC2/6/8i] are totally worthless and don't do much more than the $30 PAC converters. hopefully will get some numbers next weekend. i will post here when i do. not surprised at all that no one else has done this. hell most people here get others to install their stuff.

I would like to see the outcome of this as I too like the factory head unit but the speakers need upgrading not to mention I have an access cab which has only front speakers in the door and only the worst headliner speakers in the rear what were you thinking Toyota??

I bought my base model without knowing it had a touchscreen. I kinda don't want to take it out but I have two amps, sub and components ready to go in and I've not heard any good reviews yet for in line converters.

well if the factory receiver tests well [ no output equalization ] then you don't have to spend $100+ on a fancy LOC.

now the factory speakers leave quite a bit to be desired, mostly no damn response over what i hear as 6-8kHz. it is possible that simply adding a real tweeter [not replacing] could work wonders.

Would love to see what you find. That will help many of us out. Just got a p&p Vais satellite unit that will be installed this week and would love to do just the speakers at the same time. Thanks ahead of time for doing the work..

I have the 2013 non JBL headunit and I am in the middle of installing a JL XD500/3 amp with JL c3-650 door speakers and a JL 10w3v3-2. I love this headunit and would really prefer not to have to replace it as it works very well with the steering wheel controls and bluetooth, etc. I have everything installed and I have a faint hiss in the high end. It's not loud by any means but it's very annoying when you mute the head unit and hear this hiss. I'm trying to figure out what's causing it and I believe it is happening with the built in LoC in the Amp. I decided to try the LC2i and JL Cleansweep (obviously not together). I'll let you know if either resolve the issue. Although, based on testing it seams this head unit outputs a flat (if not very close to flat EQ) since with the Cleansweep calibrated, if I toggle the eq on it on and off there is no audible difference. If anyone has any suggestions on what this hiss might be from I would greatly appreciate it.

most likely the hiss is the noise floor of the amplifier. do you have the input gain turned up quite a bit? that would cause a good bit of noise.

Any gain adjustment has hiss. Maxed or minimum. Obviously higher gain will increase the volume of the hiss, but gain does not eliminate it.

LC2i didn't help at all. Same exact hiss. Cleansweep is going to be my next test. I'm beginning to think these 2013 non JBL head units just have a lot of noise in the internal amp in the head unit and that there is no way to eliminate this hiss completely.

I hope the Cleansweep works, keep us updated. Thanks.

Got the VAIS installed and it performs like just a factory unit. Could not believe how well it interfaces. I would not have believed that it would be so seemless. VAIS did their homework for Toyotas and Lexus. Also put in some JL C2 690tx speakers in the front doors. The sound is 100% better then stock. The stock base speakers were pathetic looking. I don't think the magnets would pick up a paper clip. Anyway, this has been a good starting place to see where I want to go. Interested in getting it better so am interested in others' post who have gone father then I at this point. However, so far I am impressed with the increase in the sound quality..

Not sure where I will go from here but wondering about the output capabilities of the stock head unit. Do not want to over tax it when I add more speakers or should I add some sort of amp. Not sure what can be added with the touch screen head unit without interfering with its' functions..

well i did some testing today with a PC based oscilloscope. there are a few "wobbles" in the speaker outputs...not where you would expect them bass is flat from 20Hz - around 100Hz, there is a slight dip from 100Hz - 175Hz, then damn flat all the way up to the ceiling [20kHz]. i don't have any screenshots to share with you right now, i want to test this a few more times to make sure of these results. then i will post screenshots. i can say that with a 1kHz tone @ -20db the deck can make 1.4v speaker level [using a 6ohm driver as a load]. i also want to try different drivers and a carbon pile as a load for testing just to make sure of the results. sorry, i need a bit more time to be accurate for you guys.
