I have been lurking and have read MANY threads about the frame rust issues with 01-04 Tacos and the extended warranty. I am looking at a 2001 DC which does have some rust on the frame; I will find out the severity this afternoon on my lunch break.

Before heading to the dealership to inspect the truck, I decided to call Toyota and talk to them about the truck since all maintenance has completed up to date at a Toyota dealer. What I was told is that back in 2011 the frame was inspected and a CRT was applied to resolve the rust issue. I mentioned that the treatment has flaked off and the frame is rusting again and was told that the treatment was the result of the recall, nothing will be done for any future rust issues on that car.

Is this right (i guess it has to be since it came straight from Toyota)? Has anyone else gotten around this somehow? Seems to me that the extended warranty for the frame would be good for 15 years no matter what treatment was done...

    Thanks for any helpful responses/opinions.

Some of this Some of that
I've never heard that if it was under coated by Toyota before the cutoff date, nothing else can be done... Usually it is covered for the 15 years after the undercoat. It could vary from region to region, they deem some places worse than others and give them more coverage. I'd call again just to make sure

There's lots of different versions of the warranty that seem to be floating around... I got mine inspected and had to explain most of it to the dealer before they finally figured it out (everyone kept thinking I was in for a state inspection)

I didn't get an undercoating but they said I can bring it in twice a year for inspection for 15 years from the date it was originally put into service (so for me sometime in 2019 I think) until it fails. I'm pretty sure mine will fail at some point before then, it's really gone downhill in my last 2 years in South Dakota. The only thing I 'm not sure on is the transferrability of the warranty after the initial inspection. If it is transferrable, pick it up cheap due to the rust and then in a couple years you'll pretty much have a brand new truck

I'm curious as to where you called and who you spoke to?
A local Toyota dealer or higher up the chain?

I called Toyota Cust service line, 800-331-4331.

I just sent an email to confirm what I was told, just seems odd to me...

Well, maybe I've been told bad info also. I'm sitting at my local Toyota dealer right now and asked the service director about the 15 yr warranty after the frame has been inspected and treated.

I was told there is 'no 15 yr warranty extension for the 2001 to 2004 trucks'.

So I asked... "what if the frame shows rust perforation after being treated and it is 6 months later or 2 yrs later?"

Answer... "it goes on a 'case by case' basis"

WTF that means I have no idea.

I'm just happy my '01 has had the frame replaced.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

    If anybody cares, Toyota's response:

    "Dear Mr. EngRWW33,

We appreciate your inquiry on the Customer Support Program (CSP) for the Frame Rust Corrosion Perforation on certain 2001 through 2004 Model Year Tacoma Vehicles and apologize that you provided with incorrect information when you called us.

Since the remedy for 1996 Through 2004 Model Year Tacoma Frame Corrosion-Resistant Treatment Limited Service Campaign (LSC) was completed, the CSP is still in effect for 15 years from the in-service date of October 8, 2001, for the 2001 Tacoma you are considering purchasing.

Had the LSC remedy not been performed, then the warranty enhancement would no longer be valid, which is not the case for the 2001 Tacoma you are interested in.

We would recommend you have your local Toyota dealer inspect the frame for rust prior to purchasing the Tacoma.

If you do purchase the Tacoma and there is corrosion perforation, please call us at 800-331-4331 or email us.

We have documented your email at our National Headquarters under file #XXXXXXX.If we can be of further assistance, please contact us. "

I'm happy with that response. For anyone else that may be wondering the same thing, this should be good explanation of what and when frame rust is covered. When in doubt, simply contact Toyota and have a questioning attitude.

    Interesting....
Sounds like my service director was right about the 'case-by-case', but incorrect about the 15 yr deal as I posed the question.

So, are you going to buy the one you looked at?

I'll buy it if I can get the deal I want.

It's listed as 12.9, has just under 119k and had timing belt done at 114k. All regular service done at the dealer (one owner). Overall it is in pretty good shape for a 2001.

I contacted a major manufacture of rust preventative product explaining my situation. I asked how long there product would last and the cost of having it professionally done on a frame with no rust!

The reply was with a caveat that I couldn't mention there product!

They said there product would last 2 to 3 years and cost several thousand dollars to have professionally done.
That I should check into local body shops to see what they would charge (with guarantee) . I was REALLY surprised on the short length of time guarantee and cost!

I haven't contacted any body shops for there input yet, but I'm dam sure it won't be as lenient as what the manufacture said, but I could be wrong.

If anyone hears things differently, please let me know. I am really interested in this topic for obvious reasons.

Excuse my ignorance but does anyone know if this warranty applies to Canadian Tacomas as well?

Same as the States for us here in Canada. As long as it was in for an inspection before a certain date, which they may have applied the coating, you are eligible for the buy back (95.5's to 2000') or frame replacement (2001's to 2004's). I could be wrong on the date but I think the deadline was something like October or November of 2011, originally was 2010 but they extended it.

Also to note, that was a 15 yr warrantee, so 95.'s to some of the 1999's (depends on inservice date) will not be eligible no matter what anymore.

Hope this helps, PM me if you want more info. I've been through both the buy back and re-frame here in Sudbury.

    Cheers,

    D'Arcy
