crack in windshield

Me and the wife got in the truck yesterday and she niticed a crack in my windshield up at the top near the rearview mirror. it is about 5-6" long. im gonna let it quit snowin before i take it somewhere to get it fixed. my question is can it be fixed ? or will i need to replace my windshield? I hope it can be fixed, i do not want a new one im afraid it might leak.

 

well thats what i thought too, but theres a place here locally that says if the crack is not as long as a dollar it could be fixed. so i wasnt sure. Due to where it is at (up behind the rear view mirror and out of sight) i dont even care what the "fix" looks like because only the passenger can see it. I just dont want it to spread down the windshield.

 

I noticed that same crack in exactly the same location on my truck. I am wondering if there is a channel in the glass for a wire to connect up a rear mirror light.

 

Safelite said anything smaller than a dollar. I have had 1 windshield replaced and a chip/4mm crack fixed in mine. Insurance covered both. I live in AZ and there are lots of rocks here.

 

Here where I live, if it was something smaller than a toonie they could do it. But that's hoping that they can get to it before it spreads. I got a chip 48 hours after I got my truck, fixed it. Got another one a month later I got another chip and it spread the next day before my glass appointment. It's out of my field of vision so I am not too concerned about it, it's close to the bottom of my window. Yesterday I just noticed it's cracked again heading down to where my wipers are. Windows can be replaced, no big deal. I know someone's front windshield is original since 2005(new) and their windshield looks like a road map.

 

"Fixing" involves drilling a pin hole at the end of the crack to stop the crack from growing. They then pump some resin into the crack to make it less noticeable. For a 6" crack, most shops will recommend you not bother spending money on this procedure and just replace the windshield.

 

A lot of members on this forum have glass insurance(State/Province/Country dependant of course). I am not sure if it's the case for you personally though. I'd honestly just get another windshield and not bother repairing it. Waste of time and money.

Here where I live in Canada it's around $450 CDN(with install). I am sure that it's a lot cheaper there in the USA.
