Hi all, 2001 Tacoma TRD off-road looking for advise if not to much trouble, was out on highway today 60 mph heard some grinding noise come from transmission then nothing, can shift into any gear but will not engage, even tried 4X4 and still nothing..... trucks starts fine, no light came on, no high temps. really not sure what happened, i check the fluid and all seemed right with that. ended up having it towed home

    Any thought?

    Thanks for your time

    Eric

Okay, i see your profile said Auto.. was about to give you shit for not telling us what trans you have....

That sure is a weird one... What did the engine do? did it stall? did it rev up? The fluid is still red and doesn't smell burnt?

I'd pull the valve body cover off and check the screens for metal debris.

The Engine did rev up, like it was not in gear, the fluid does not smell burnt but does have a brownish black red look to it. if that make since. i know it is weird, i check the linkage and all seems tight and right, this has me stumped to, i think i should drop the pan and see whats going on and what it looks like, can provide pics if that will help, i don't transmission but fluid change so might not even know what am looking at.

I hope this doesn't scare you, but sounds very similar to what happened last year to my wife's Sante Fe. She was just coasting, heard something, hit the gas, engine revved, no go. No noise from the transmission. Everything seemed normal as if the transmission was in neutral though.

Turns out that the pump went out. ~$2,000 later, it was back on the road. The first 120K miles are questionable, but since that everything had been serviced. It was at 143K miles when the transmission went out. The fluid still looked good and smelt fine. Hopefully you have better luck and/or have a decent shop to tear it apart (if need be).
