I'm trying to find me a second hand rack set up on my extended can to haul a couple of stand up paddle boards. I see quite a few on my local Craigslist but, not sure if they are all vehicle specific or some parts are interchangeable. I have a softtopper on so this will be soley over the cab. Any help?

You need Yakima or Thule mounting bases that go into your roof tracks.

The feet or towers mount/lock onto the bases (suggest you get locking feet/towers). The 'rack' cross bars mount to the feet/towers.

The feet/towers and cross bars are removable. Suggest you check at a sporting goods store or a custom truck supply store for the correct fit, or look up the Yakma/Thule fit guide on line.

After you determine what you need, then go shopping on Craig's List

Truthfully, it gets kind of complicated. I have Q-towers. I have 2 sets mounted on my campershell and then run a set of Q-towers with a Tacoma door jamb adapter for a bar that runs from door to door. This allows me to haul a 16' canoe.

I spent hours researching and then went to my local outdoor store and looked at the products there. Just remember, you may want to make it so it CAN fit other stuff later (snowboards, canoes, kayaks, etc).

eBay is also a good place to look.

Regarding brand, Yakima is popular in my area and there are quite a bit of kayakers in our region and most seem to run Yakima. I heard some folks say they didn't like this-or-that about Thule, but personally I have no experience with Thule and can't say. However, the Yakima stuff I have seems to be good quality and works well.

There's really a ton of options out there - especially if you're going for function over aesthetics. I don't really have much experience with the clamp-on type towers though, but my dad has Yakima clamp-ons on his Honda Fit and they've been used heavily for kayaking and haven't given him too much grief.

So the bases are vehicle specific but, the towers/crossbars are interchangeable correct? Is there another option than drilling into my roof? I see on cars where they go into the foot jam. Obviously I only have a 2 door though

I believe your only option (to get 2 roof rack bars across the roof) is drilling on the rear one. You can get clamp on ones for the door sills but the rear you're SOL from the small amount of research I've done

Hmmm not to keen on putting some holes in my roof. But, if that's what everyone else does I guess it works. Anyone have a link to a how to on this? I did a search and didn't come up with what I was hunting.

Will the distance between the cross bars be great enough to support a stand up paddle board? I'm just thinking of my 9'6" long board. I wouldn't want to stress it that much, but maybe a paddle board is much stronger.

My vantech roof rack just showed up, but that's for my camper shell. You gotta drill it.

So landing pad 7s and q towers is what I need. I'm thinking two bars over the cab and then a hitch carrier on the back.
