If it's not made correctly it can kill someone. If you buy the "real" stuff take a spoonful and light it on fire. If it burns red don't drink it. If it's blue it's good stuff. You really have to watch people who don't know what they're doing. They've even used car radiators which will introduce antifreeze into the mix, etc...

That stuff isn't near as good as the "real" stuff lol.

My family (McCoy) has their own recipe (I need to get one day from my Uncle), and I've also got my wife's family recipe with setup, temperatures, ingredients, etc... here at the house from the mid to late 1800's I think.

And before anyone asks... yes I've seen that joke of a show Hatfield/McCoy Moonshine. Worst scripted show I've ever watched. Jim's real last name is Quick not McCoy. They are a direct line to the real McCoy's but don't really carry the last name. I have the whole family history book here at the house that tells the story of the Hatfields/McCoy's. Not the 95% made up crap from the History Mini-Series. Tickle's show is a joke too. People will believe anything just because it's on TV LOL

I would like to see some recipes for sure! Intending on setting up a small still this coming spring also :) There is a company called Onyx in Ct. who has been making/selling there shine and with the right fusion ingredients it's worked for me.......still....would like to make my own! We all know how Moonshiners/Tickle are all scripted.......but it makes for some good laughs! Gotta admit Tickle is a character!! :drunk:

Tickle's show is entertaining I give it that haha.

As a real McCoy with the real last name... the Hatfield/McCoy Moonshine show really gets on my nerves. Hatfields and McCoys signed a treaty in 2003 and don't fight anymore. Heck they're even marrying each other now lol. Stupid History channel is getting crazy with these non-history shows. It's not even the History Channel anymore.

They have been marrying each other for a long time. I am from The area. I have Hatfield and McCoy blood as lots of people in the area do. My 3 times Great Grandfather is "Bad" Frank Phillips. Hayfields and McCoys have been working together, partying together and marrying each other for decades.

I live in Kentucky and all I recall about the show is that it brought tourism to Pike County. That and Kevin Costner was in it... love him in Water World (sarcasm). Not sure how much the folks in Pike County, outside of the businesses to profit, appreciate that. I live just off of I-75 and during high travel weekends all I do is complain about foreigners on our interstates and eating in our restaurants.

People kept asking me if I watched it, and was talking about how this and that happened... I'm like people will believe anything on TV. 95% of that Mini-Series was made for TV lol. Some of it was truthful though. I think they must've interviewed like 100 Hatfields and 1 McCoy LOL.

We used to joke about it being "The Hitler Channel" because it seemed the only shows they ran were WWII documentaries.

That was before scripted "reality" shows and ancient aliens.

"Devils Ride" is just as fake. The Laffing Devils are a real MC. SynMob was created by the studio.
The life of a real biker, even a 1%er, makes for boring TV.

Black Sand Pearl factory paint - flattened "au natural" by tree branches.
You can pick up one of those cheap ass home made wine kits and do it up following the instructions. Then when it's done run it through a still 3 or 4 times till it's like 90% alcohol. Then add the cider flavor and your good to go. I've seen it done. Don't ask... :D

I did not read through 4 pages of why moon shining is a no no with the federal government and the OP asked about hard cider. So if it was posted before sorry but here is the recipe I use for hardcider/apple wine. This was from edwort on home brew tLk originally.

5 gallons of store bought apple juice
    2lbs corn sugar
    1 packet Montrachet wine yeast.

Mix it all toghter in a sanitized container (I use 5 g water jugs from the store), place bung and airlock on bottle place 80+ proof vodka or similar in air lock and let it sit for 1+ month 2 imonths-8 months is the best. Bottle and enjoy.

You can carbonate this or serve it still, warm or cold, I keg mine and serve it carbonated and cold.

Another version I use that tastes more like a hard cider vs a dry flavor apple wine is this

5 g store bought apple juice
    1lb dark brown sugar
1 pack of Nottingham Ale yeast

Prett close to above but I shorten the fermentation to a total of about 2 1/2 months, keg and serve chilled this is a sweeter version with a lower abv

This is such a simple procedure and very forgiving if you mess up, I use all sorts of variations of yeast and sugars and different brands of apple juice.
